AWE DVD

The DVD is out in some parts of the world already, and I was reading a scan of part of the box in someone's journal. (I won't say who they are just in case they don't want anyone to know, or get swamped - unless they give me explicit permission for a link.) Since this person has posted a link to their entry in a discussion community, I feel safe in now providing the direct link if you haven't yet seen it.

Two interesting things:

First question: What does the future hold for Will and Elizabeth? Now that he's captain of the Flying Dutchman, is she going to wait for him? Answer: True love never dies, but their story is yet to be told.

Second: Since Will honored his destiny on the Flying Dutchman, in 10 years does he get to return to land for good, thereby freeing his father and crew? Answer: Every 10 years, Will may step on land for one day. He is bound to the Flying Dutchman forever.

There are a few others, too. I don't know if these are on the U.S. DVD, but I'm betting they are. Be interesting to see what fandom reaction is to these (especially that second one, given the writers' insistence on the "only 10 years' service" thing) ...

God, that's weird. I was just doing one of those random-y LJ to LJ moseys, and I came upon EXACTLY this entry about half an hour ago.

I haven't yet been able to decide if these bits of info really annoy me or not. Really, for my own selfish fic purposes, I can live with #2. But in terms of canon? No way. That fucking sucks. And also, wow. I cannot even begin to imagine the amount of dissention and argument that must have been going on behind the scenes of the film if this vital bit of info totally contradicts what the writers have explicitly said.

And #1? Oh, please. Could we throw another cliche in there just for good measure?

(Hmm, on second thoughts, I'd say, yes, I AM annoyed... *g*)

Kind of a copout, isn't it?

Oh well - the sparrabethers are not the only ones this works for. Remember, Elizabeth dies eventually.

Yeah, I was wondering if that roughly translates to "Elizabeth couldn't keep her legs together if her pubic hair was on fire"?

Which, as I orginally intended (for posterity herein) to mean, do they think so little of their own character that she is incapable of basic loyalty and self-sacrifice every adult human is required at some point in life to make? (And I guess I don't get the attraction for J/E fans who are thinking True Love - did their mothers never give them the same speech mine gave me? "If he (or she, in this case) cheats on someone to be with you, how can you ever trust them not to cheat on you?")

These clowns couldn't put together a cohesive narrative if their nuts were in a vise.I think the movies need to stand on their own, and since they DON'T stand on their own, any post-movie commentary to me is just icing on dog shit, frankly. When the actors admit to just winging it most of the time for the last two movies because they didn't have a working script, we're supposed to take this stuff as gospel?

It just annoys me that here we all are, getting back to a somewhat peaceful coexistence in fandom (overall, I mean - there's still a little gripe here and there, sure), and you KNOW this is going to flare up again. There can't be just a "Cool! This has possibilities for us!" (And I've already seen the "Sail on, fishy boy!" comment on a sparrabether's LJ, and the damn thing just came out today. And no, it's not the journal where I originally read the box scan.)

I figured #2 would happen. At least, that's how I interpreted things as AWE presented them. Then again, #1 does offer a tease at a different ending, so who knows?

From: [identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com
I'm not surprised at #2. It's the #1 Drama Llama I see galloping toward me already that's annoying. Fandom was a fun, peaceful sandbox before the J/E fans got drunk on a little power.

Date: 2007-11-13 01:57 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] stabbycutlass.livejournal.com
I think it sucks royally. However, given that the writers have pretty much had the opposite opinion, and I have my own interpretation of the film, I'm going to treat it like other "Official Disney" products that never reaches the hands of the writers, such as books, comics, video games, etc.

People are still going to do what they please in fandom, however, this will most likely make drama.

Date: 2007-11-13 02:03 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com
It'll create drama, all right. Goddammit, I thought we were finally getting around it in fandom, to a peaceful coexistence, albeit with the occasional minor gripe.

Okay, explaining things that should have been clear in the actual movie on the DVD case (or whatever), cheap cop-out and irritating as hell.

It's like they're setting up the next three movies. Or even better they've hired a hack like Max Allen Collins to write a 'Disney approved' grand, sweeping novel. It'll be better than the comics! Pre-order today!

Date: 2007-11-13 02:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com
It's their movie, so I guess they can write anything they want. What I want to know is, is fandom going to be peaceful about this, or are we going to have problems again? (On both sides, yes, to be fair - when one pokes, the other pokes back. But one pokes, first.)

That second one annoys me. Actually, so does the first. They can give some stupid roundabout answer for if she's faithful but Will's definitely stuck on the Dutchman for forever?

The writers didn't say it was only ten years, they said it was left up to our interpretation whether it was only ten years or forever. I'm a bit pissed that the box is taking away our choice in the matter.

I think we can work around Disney - I never had a problem dealing with them so much. It's certain fans I'd like to smack upside the head for their insistence that they're right, anyone else is wrong, and HAHAHA YOU STUPID PEOPLE. (Sorry, I'm having flashbacks to last summer ... lol ...)

Actually, the bit about the crew not being set free is what gets me. I know I'm going to sound paranoid, but it almost sounds like what I had asked Ted back in the summer. Sure you can say Will is trapped forever on the Dutchman, but they had to go in and mention the crew as well? Why now, brown cow?

I saw the post on said user's page. I didn't think it was possible, but I'm now even more disappointed with AWE than I was before. Will and Elizabeth's story isn't done? What, they're going to screw them over even more? And only two deleted scenes!? Geez, why even bother if you're only going to give us two! I've made my choice, I'm not getting the DVD.

Don't be positive you saw it on the same LJ I did. The one I saw it on only has a handful of comments by a couple of people. And none are bashing or Will put-downs. ;-)

I don't blame you. I like the movie, so I'll get it - but I didn't buy DMC.

Aw shit. *rolls eyes* Ouch!

Well, I was never bothered by the second, but the writer's insistence otherwise did seem to keep the wank-happy "believers" to a manageable roar. I guess we'll soon see if those folks are willing to go door to door constantly yet again with their message for the masses.

The first one is kinda "duh." But I'll be rolling my eyes again if they ever backpedal on "young Will" seen in the theater version's easter egg.

Yeah, so, to paraphrase a Kathy Griffin quote: "They are eating shit and backpedaling so fast..."

I used to just read and write the fanfiction. It's no coincidence I enjoyed things much more then. I have a bad stubborn streak that won't let me make a comment to some asinine post or comment, get jumped on, and then walk away; it's my own fault.

God, that sucks. Fandom has basically sidelined Will anyway, but this pretty much puts the final nail in the coffin, doesn't it?

After the "only ten years" thing the writers insisted on, that's basically what I go with, because the alternative is really punitive. I generally think that this new info is them cleaning up the mess after they cut parts out of the movie. I'm actually forgetting what you call it when the actual writers/producers/ mess with canon after the fact to fix things they've screwed up.

I suppose it can't get any worse. 90% of the fic one reads these days is ELizabeth/anyone except Will, so I don't know what can really change.

Date: 2007-11-13 07:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com
I'm trying to think of a *good* way to bring this up for discussion at the Will community, something that won't degenerate into wank - you know, "head it off at the pass" by hitting it head-on and in a positive fashion. Do you have any suggestions for what angle I might approach, I wonder? You usually seem sensible. :-)

Actually, my sense of humor about fandom fled the coop long ago. I recognize the humor, I just don't feel it so much anymore. That's what happens when you're constantly ribbed, verbally kicked in the teeth, and nudged a little too hard in the ribs once too often.

Is there an answer that the flash of green at the end (when the Dutchman disappears) actually is James' resurrection?

*whistles innocently*

And fun, that their answer contradicts that of T&T. LETS COVER UP THE SHODDY EDITING SOME MORE.

And please, if there is a POTC IV, I so do NOT want the Liz story told.

Unless it features your example of pubic hair on fire. Literally. That could be amusing.

Date: 2007-11-13 06:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com
I had all kinds of theories for that flash of green, from James being resurrected, to Elizabeth getting pregnant (technically, *part* of Will is left alive in the world after he leaves), to crewmembers being freed from the Dutchman (but I would think they'd die, not come back to life). Hell, I don't know, LOL.

I think the Liz story's been told quite enough, actually. If they think there's a big enough audience for more, separate it out into its own series and see how much money she's capable of raking in without Jack's (or Barbossa's) presence. ;-) (To be fair, I don't think any character but Jack would have a chance of drawing in that much audience at the top of the marquee.)
