The DVD is out in some parts of the world already, and I was reading a scan of part of the box in someone's journal. (I won't say who they are just in case they don't want anyone to know, or get swamped - unless they give me explicit permission for a link.) Since this person has posted a link to their entry in a discussion community, I feel safe in now providing the direct link if you haven't yet seen it.
Two interesting things:
First question: What does the future hold for Will and Elizabeth? Now that he's captain of the Flying Dutchman, is she going to wait for him? Answer: True love never dies, but their story is yet to be told.
Second: Since Will honored his destiny on the Flying Dutchman, in 10 years does he get to return to land for good, thereby freeing his father and crew? Answer: Every 10 years, Will may step on land for one day. He is bound to the Flying Dutchman forever.
There are a few others, too. I don't know if these are on the U.S. DVD, but I'm betting they are. Be interesting to see what fandom reaction is to these (especially that second one, given the writers' insistence on the "only 10 years' service" thing) ...

Date: 2007-11-13 01:30 am (UTC)I haven't yet been able to decide if these bits of info really annoy me or not. Really, for my own selfish fic purposes, I can live with #2. But in terms of canon? No way. That fucking sucks. And also, wow. I cannot even begin to imagine the amount of dissention and argument that must have been going on behind the scenes of the film if this vital bit of info totally contradicts what the writers have explicitly said.
And #1? Oh, please. Could we throw another cliche in there just for good measure?
(Hmm, on second thoughts, I'd say, yes, I AM annoyed... *g*)

Date: 2007-11-13 01:53 am (UTC)Which, as I orginally intended (for posterity herein) to mean, do they think so little of their own character that she is incapable of basic loyalty and self-sacrifice every adult human is required at some point in life to make? (And I guess I don't get the attraction for J/E fans who are thinking True Love - did their mothers never give them the same speech mine gave me? "If he (or she, in this case) cheats on someone to be with you, how can you ever trust them not to cheat on you?")

Date: 2007-11-13 02:13 am (UTC)It's like they're setting up the next three movies. Or even better they've hired a hack like Max Allen Collins to write a 'Disney approved' grand, sweeping novel. It'll be better than the comics! Pre-order today!

Date: 2007-11-13 02:14 am (UTC)The writers didn't say it was only ten years, they said it was left up to our interpretation whether it was only ten years or forever. I'm a bit pissed that the box is taking away our choice in the matter.

Date: 2007-11-13 03:07 am (UTC)Well, I was never bothered by the second, but the writer's insistence otherwise did seem to keep the wank-happy "believers" to a manageable roar. I guess we'll soon see if those folks are willing to go door to door constantly yet again with their message for the masses.
The first one is kinda "duh." But I'll be rolling my eyes again if they ever backpedal on "young Will" seen in the theater version's easter egg.

Date: 2007-11-13 07:39 am (UTC)After the "only ten years" thing the writers insisted on, that's basically what I go with, because the alternative is really punitive. I generally think that this new info is them cleaning up the mess after they cut parts out of the movie. I'm actually forgetting what you call it when the actual writers/producers/ mess with canon after the fact to fix things they've screwed up.
I suppose it can't get any worse. 90% of the fic one reads these days is ELizabeth/anyone except Will, so I don't know what can really change.

Date: 2007-11-13 04:14 pm (UTC)Actually, my sense of humor about fandom fled the coop long ago. I recognize the humor, I just don't feel it so much anymore. That's what happens when you're constantly ribbed, verbally kicked in the teeth, and nudged a little too hard in the ribs once too often.

And fun, that their answer contradicts that of T&T. LETS COVER UP THE SHODDY EDITING SOME MORE.
And please, if there is a POTC IV, I so do NOT want the Liz story told.
Unless it features your example of pubic hair on fire. Literally. That could be amusing.

Date: 2007-11-13 06:34 pm (UTC)I think the Liz story's been told quite enough, actually. If they think there's a big enough audience for more, separate it out into its own series and see how much money she's capable of raking in without Jack's (or Barbossa's) presence. ;-) (To be fair, I don't think any character but Jack would have a chance of drawing in that much audience at the top of the marquee.)
