I put down a few thoughts on the whole gaming/Lara Croft drama really quick yesterday; if you want, you can find it over here. I'm not a gamer - I've always been sort of an anomaly among fellow geeks I know - and such as this would not help me want to be one.

Wow.

This wasn't even a blip on my radar as, like you, I'm not a gamer. However, I went over there and read the articles and watched the video. I don't know if that's the regular voice actress for this character, but yeah. Her voice was very girlish, even babyish, and she screamed a lot. I mean, realistically, if you're falling or think you're about to die, I think its pretty much a given you're going to scream. You might try not to, but it happens. However, she screamed an excessive amount.

Also I love (insert sarcasm here) how the moments where she's weak or about to be brutalized the video games' graphics go from mediocre to absolutely stunning. It's almost like they spent the most time and effort on them. (Imagine that.)

This is definitely not how I picture Lara Croft, and by this I mean the Angelina Jolie / Chris Barrie films. She would take care of business and then need some quiet time later. Preferably with H there for support if it was needed. Though even then, she'd probably blow off some steam shooting holograms and rage against the machine there.

While I do not, absolutely DO NOT agree with that whole rapey scene, I loved that she kicked complete ass. And reiterating that I do no approve or condone such behavior in real life or in video games, had this been a completely random video game with a completely random new heroine, it might have worked as she still didn't take any sh*t. Perhaps make this her beginning story arc and NEVER, absolutely NEVER touch that aspect of her "beginnings" again with a ten foot pole.

Yikes, I'm late replying ....

If you want to go back to that post, I replied to someone else on this, so I don't have to repeat it here.

But basically, the idea being "if male characters are badass, it's almost never because THEIR adversity was a rape, so why do so many female characters have to face it?"
