Title: "Omission"
Rating: G
Characters: Jack, Will, Gibbs
Disclaimer: I don't own them. If I did, I'd set them free to be. :-)
Summary: "Don't do anything stupid." Is it all Will's fault? Set in CotBP; written for the [livejournal.com profile] potc100 prompt "Truth."

He was coming to the conclusion the world had some funny truth.

“Have I ever given you reason not to trust me?”

More importantly, had Jack ever given Will reason to?

He seethed, letting his feet make his decision as he turned and strode quietly back out to the boat, grabbing up the closest oar he could find.

“The kid?”

“… his only child.”

Will might never understand pirate truth. But thanks to years of straining to hear orders over the snickety wheeze of bellows and ringing hammer, it was true he could understand stage-hushed pirate voices ten feet away.

Nice, very nice, and says something that I've been thinking about.

Will really had every reason not to trust Jack, especially after the overheard conversation.

Jack's probably lucky that Will didn't break his skull open with that oar. Not sure I'd want a blacksmith hitting me with ANYTHING.

Thanks for reading!

I really like this look at Will in that moment.

What is a more funny truth is that Jack seems to think Will would trust him.

Jack sees things a certain way and thinks everybody else should, as well. That may be the one thing he, Elizabeth, and Will all three have in common. (But don't we all, really?)

First of all, I have to say that you should do more of these 'This you didn't see on the DVD'- revelations. You're good at them :)

And second; Very good questions :D

You have any particular moments of canon in mind? *G*

Thanks - I try. ;-)

Well, since you asked... *g*

There's the leettle gap between Will so obviously ditching Elizabeth and preparing to board the Pearl the discovery that there's no ship waiting for her Captain and the scene at the gallows.

We know that Gov. Swann granted Will clemency upon their arrival to PR, but what happens on the Dauntless before that?

I'll owe you if you write that.
Look > IOU ________, you can fill the rest yourself, OK? Deal? ;)

Oh, nicely done!

I always end up saying 'Yes! out loud when watching that scene. Because Jack's done quite a few things to make Will doubt his trustworthiness. Like hitting him with the Interceptor's boom. And that conversation with Gibbs. And his general failure to explain what the hell he's doing and why.

Since Will doesn't know about his connection with the trunk of coins at this point, or even about the single medallion, he can only go by what he observes - and he observes that Jack wants something he failed to tell Will about (a rather big something) and is taking his sweet time about sneaking around to stop Barbossa. I'd probably hit him, too, at that point.

You know the first time I saw CotBP, when Jack asked “Have I ever given you reason not to trust me?” I remember muttering "Have you ever given him reason to trust you?".

I always pictured Will as someone with major trust issues, and never understood how Jack never noticed that 'like' in him, and expected Will to just buy what ever he was selling without question or thought.

Basically, u write gud, me likey.

They're hot as hell together, but there's definitely no love (to be) lost between them in most of the first movie, that's for sure. There's not even like to be lost, LOL.

U komment gooder, maek me happiez.

stage-hushed pirate voices

Hmmm, the plot thickens. Did Jack intend for Will to overhear the conversation? Should that have given Will--whom we know to be an intelligent lad--some clue that Jack had a plan other than the obvious? I agree with [livejournal.com profile] danglingdingle, love, you should do more of these.:)

I'm not convinced Jack wanted Will to know - after all, he could've just told him if that were the case. (We see Jack deliberately choose to keep Will in the dark about Davy Jones in DMC, so no, I don't think he meant for Will to hear it. But YOU tell me what that expression's about when Will looks over his shoulder. *G*)

Thanks!

It's a fact that sometimes Jack plays things just a little too close to the vest.

Will's not a simpleton and, considering the waters he's now swimming in, he adapts very quickly. He can put together the fact that Jack only agreed to Will's freeing him from gaol when he weaseled out of Will who his father was, and with overhearing the conversation regarding Bootstrap's only child, he knows he's being used. It's time for Will to get what he came after, Jack's plans be damned.

Methinks that Jack underestimated Will's pirate blood just a tad.

I love fresh insights into Will, and this was perfect. Keep it up, please.

I think Jack thought that Will would always play fair and above-board, since he did it when they first met and again, when Will sprang him from jail. I've seen fans say, while watching DMC, "ah, finally Will learns to cheat." Um, no - Will already cheated, when he knocked Jack in the head with the oar. The "rules" say that you dance with what brung you, and Jack definitely brought him to the cave party. Will chose not to dance any longer. *G*

Thanks for reading!

Very good. :) I agree. He's young, tends to be rather adamant about things he's always believed, but that doesn't mean he doesn't use the brain God gave him. He's had a simple life, but he's stubborn, not stupid.

I don't think Will truly trusts him at any point in the series. I think he has faith, blind and otherwise, in him sometimes, but it's not really the same.

Will's biggest problem, yes, is what he doesn't yet know about the world and human nature. But he learns fast, that's for sure.

Good view of this scene.

I'm sure it involved Will's lack of trust of what Jack had in mind for him, (did he know about the blood-connection then?) but I also saw a lot of Will's own incessant determination to save Elizabeth his way. He seemed in immediate fear of her being killed by Barbossa and probably wasn't willing for Jack to get in 'his' way. Will had already ignored him before rumrunner island and done what he wanted to do aboard the Pearl with Barbossa.

I think Rumrunner Island came after this scene (sometimes I can't recall them in order either - I had to ask somebody else what Jack's exact line was for this scene because I couldn't remember it, LOL). But you're right, Will ignores him several times and pretty much always to his own detriment. Still, I understand the guy - Jack has been fairly mysterious and made no mention of the Pearl or his designs upon her (and Will didn't want the ship, so why clam up? I don't know). Thanks for reading!

Yes, all of that. You know, I always thought the turning point in that scene was when Jack told him not to do anything stupid. Up until then, Will almost looked like he was buying it (or, you know, was just completely mesmerised by Jack's eyes XP). But when Jack says 'stupid', Will sort of blinks like he's just registered what Jack's said, then there's the jaw-grind and the decision to bop him on the head, made right there.

From: [identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com
I can relate to that. Will doesn't enjoy being called stupid or thought simple-minded (likely because of his age and station in life) - it's a trigger for many people to go "off" on someone.

But you'll notice - Jack never refers that way to him again, except once in the caves in a flattering aside when speaking to Barbossa (and as code to Will to get ready).

I like your explanation, because it has always bothered me that Will was somehow able to hear over that horrible din, in between being harrassed.

I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been for Will to grow up in a sweltering environment with a man who seems to readily take credit for all of his hard work!

This passage was immensely believable and very well done!

I don't think Brown was abusive to Will (as some fic writers have postulated), but I do think he established a habit of taking credit. And to a point, you can do that as the master ... but only if the kid is young and still under tutelage. At some point they deserve their own credit so they can become a journeyman.

Thanks for readin!
