more piratey ramblings - playing cards
Oct. 27th, 2007 10:50 amIn the continuing saga of "Veronica's Sluggish Brain Struggles to Catch Up," it only occurred to me this morning to connect the whole of POTC - especially the end parts of AWE - with those old-time playing-card images that used to be on the CotBP website. (Anyone remember those or have the photos? There were like 4 wallpapers, each with four cards, each card bearing an image of one of the characters. In one, Will was the King, Elizabeth was the Queen, and Jack was ... well, the Jack - which is the Knave, which is defined as a tricky, deceitful man and/or man of low birth.)
They were all the same suit - hearts, I believe, irony of ironies - and while Will's and Elizabeth's positions are reversed (I so still need a "Queen William" icon - "Princess Consort" just doesn't have the same ring), that's generally how it ended up. I know those playing cards were posted well before a sequel ever started filming, but I wonder who designed them and if they were *meant* be harbingers, or if staring at those is what helped give the Wonder Twins the idea of how to end the trilogy - from what I've read, the first thing they decided on was Will's ending, and that drove everything else. (But, there were three other wallpapers with "cards" on them as well, and I just wonder if those are significant to the end of the trilogy, as well. Anyone want to venture guesses, if they've seen/have those others? Also, I don't remember the "Ace" in the hearts suit.)
Interestingly, though, it also occurred to me this morning that Jack is the one who put *both* Will and Elizabeth in their positions of power. Each worked or wended their way unknowingly toward those ultimate goals, but it was Jack who voted for Elizabeth, and Jack who stabbed Will's hand into Davy Jones's heart. Jack is also the reason, indirectly, that little Liam (as I name him) exists, by keeping Will alive. Makes me wonder if Jack would become something of the kid's godfather, or at least if he'll end up doing something to help that kid into a position of power once he's a man. At the very least, in some fic circles, Jack's earned himself a position as Consort to one or both of the more powerful people of the seas. *G*
