Possible job

There is a possible job as an assistant editor for a publication to which I already contribute. I'm not so worried about my chances of actually being offered a job, as I am about the salary/benefits/relocation expenses I might (not) be offered. (It is in another state, in the Midwest.)

Freelancing isn't well-paid, but unfortunately it still pays better than many full-time jobs in writing. *sigh*

It can't hurt to ask (possibly for a little more than you need), all they can do is say no. But if they like you enought to hire you it is possible they'll be willing to negotiate a little.
