There was a story through Google News about this 70-year-old restaurant owner in Ohio who served Obama breakfast this morning when he stopped in for a campaign visit with the diners. A few hours later, she fell ill and died of natural causes, according to the article. The only two comments on the story were "One less vote for the zero" and "An omen?"

That's some classy shit. KLASSY, as [livejournal.com profile] crevette would say. I'm sure her family appreciates her death being reduced to some political punchline. Hunh hunh har har duhhhr.

Speaking of KLASSTM, check out this essay on a woman being harassed online for soliciting donations for a feminist study. What gets me are the comments below defending the threats of violence and general nastiness as valid criticism under the ever-precious "free speech." There is no situation in which you can reasonably say that threatening a person is the same as simple criticism or disagreement of their POV.

I can quite see why there are people who, while they might otherwise support his politics, will never vote for Romney purely because of that. It's very telling of what kind of person he is. I mean it's not always good to judge a person on one thing they did, a long time a go, but I think that's mostly the case when it's things done in the heat of a moment, or when in the grip of strong emotions or under severe stress. This wasn't the case with that whole dog thing. That's something he had to think about and consciously decide, "yes, this is a perfectly acceptable thing to do, treat this dog like a piece of luggage."

Context matters, too. So you did this for a couple of miles because you were almost home and the dog just threw up and it was hot and you were about to kill the kids anyway? You're a dumb teenager and don't know any better? OK, I can see it. But even on an airplane, they keep the large animals and carriers inside the airplane when they put them in the hold, geez.
