If you're interested, OK, I want you to watch this ...

Jack: *flutter flutter look for the advantage to himself*

Will Phillip: *indignantly, over Elizabeth the mermaid* You're killing her!

As I told someone else - Disney's no fool. They knew what dynamic and personalities worked, and if they couldn't get the originals back, they were going to stick as close to the formula as possible. ;-)

I wish I could get truly excited about the movie but every time I see a clip or trailer all I can think about is faux! Will and how much better it would've been with the real thing.

I'm sure I'll see it because I love Ian and Geoffry but the Captain Jack shtick is getting a bit stale for me, to be perfectly honest.

All that aside it does look like a fun romp (if I can ignore my obvious prejudices *g*)

Well, they couldn't get real! Will back and I for one think it's kind of humorous they couldn't. "Critical flop they'll call me, will they!" Bloom huffs. "Alrighty. I'll just go play with some indie directors and diddle a hottie and have a kid. Smoke THAT."

Was that Jack saying, "I'm a bad man" or someone else? (Blackbeard?) The clip was so short I couldn't tell.

And I thought Phillip was Will, for a second there.

I think that was Jack. It's hard to tell!

And I thought Phillip was Will, for a second there. - I'm just waiting to see the Fandom Feminist rationale for how Evil Oppressive Phillip is Evil and Oppressive for trying to keep the mermaid from dying. You know he is. ;-)

Okay, this is actually the first time I've been excited to see it. Much better than the teasers, with a hint of plot (beyond Blackbeard! Fountain of Youth! Sexy Spanish lady!) and why the new pretty young people are there. Also...did I see Groves for half a second? ::flails:: Wait, don't tell me. I'm gonna go into this thing completely unspoiled with no expectations whatsoever. There was a Yahoo article about the actress playing the mermaid recently and I refused to click it.

Well, seeing as how you don't want to be spoiled, I can't answer you (I thought about a blank reply just to show you how unspoiling I can be, but I was afraid it could be confused with "doesn't know how to operate a keyboard," LOL). But I could answer one question you pose. Even though I won't. *G*

I don't really care enough to look for spoilers, to be honest. But when somebody posts it on my f-list, I'll watch a trailer or click on a poster art. Mainly at this point, I'm just amused by the boy.

Sorry, I still can't muster any excitement for the new movie. For me, the draw of the previous movies was the shared story between Will, Jack and Elizabeth; I'm simply not interested in a purely Jack vehicle, which is what this seems to be. Plus all of the fandom drama caused by certain folks has left such a bad taste in my mouth, it has killed the joy POTC used to give me. I'm trying to get it back, but it doesn't look likely at this point. And my attentions are certainly elsewhere right now.

I do have to admit to getting a chuckle from the, "Depends on the light," line though. :) First time anything about the new movie has made me smile a little bit.

My favorite line was the one right before that - "Does this face look like it's been to the Fountain of Youth?" LOLOLOL

My solution is to go see the movie once - twice if it's good - and stay the hell away from fandom. I didn't enjoy having it ruined for me once and I'll be damned if I cooperate with it happening again.

I think I'd just be repeating kahva if I gave my opinion, so, yeah, what she said. :-) That and...

The more they repeat themselves like this, the duller that formula of which you speak gets. :-/ I think a character like Jack Sparrow - a Trickster - is supposed to be the spice of the story, not the meat and potatoes. Though we really won't know just how completely Jack will dominate this Pirates till we've seen it. And based on this preview, he definitely has the more interesting and engaging romantic partner. Female pirate versus victimized half-animal woman? No contest in my mind right now. Though, again, we won't really know until we see it.

Yeah, too much of the same thing tends to dull it over time. Still, maybe the movie will be fun on its own. (There's no way I'm getting back into the fandom - but I can have fun at a movie.)

I was quite excited about it until I watched the trailer. Now I'm not so sure. Blackbeard isn't exactly charismatic in his clips, and as Venusinchains says, I think there's too much Jack for a character who was best as a mysterious wildcard.

I got a new icon out of it though, so it can't be all bad :)

I think Gillette looks better in this one than the last one. He's older; maybe that's it. He doesn't look like he just finished being a teenager anymore. :-P

He's certainly matured quite a bit - I think he had only just finished being a teenager in the last one. But I suspect he only looks better because that clip caught him on a rare occasion where he wasn't pulling a face, and he'll be as unphotogenic as always in the rest of it :)

I will still pretty much go watch this just because it has Ian McShane in it and anything with Al Swearengen is okay by me. Also I think Cruz can stand well against Depp. Honestly couldn't care less about whathisface and his mermaid.

Am kind of excited by one of the mermaids tackling someone out of the boats - vicious mermaids make me happy - and the Pearl come to life, and I'm sure the movie is going to be a feast of set design and costuming, which can really entertain me.

Really, they'd have to try to do as badly as some of the things they came up with in the latter two potcs. If they don't start the movie with ten minutes of racist twaddle, I'll call it a win.

Though, I am kind of disappointed that the new romantic lead dude isn't black. I was hoping to see some racial diversity that wasn't CANNIBALS! ASIAN STEREOTYPES! Plus, you know, the Caribbean, I hear it has some black people there.

Just to see a black character for that itself - I don't want to make it out that I'm fetishizing. But from the POV of if the Will replacement had been black or Indian or otherwise non-white and -English? Oh yeah - I would've been happy to accept a different kind of lead character overall.

Do I need to point out that this movie is being made by the same people who cast Jake Gyllenhaal as the Prince of Persia?

I'm not going to bother with it because Orli's not in it. I may be shallow, but honestly the only thing that got me through some bits of At World's End was seeing him be pretty.

I'm not going to see this movie not only because it looks dumb but also because I am broke. Agonizingly broke. Geez, I need a job. Stupid college education.

I find it funny that they seem to be upping the futility of the star crossed lovers angle. First it was a couple separated by class and now it's one separated by species. Next thing you know, they'll quite literally be star crossed and the female love interest will be an alien of some kind :P

Okay, I'm going to be the unpopular one here:

I am sooooo looking forward to this movie that I just hope it turns out half as good as the first one. Yep, I'd love it if Will were in it but he's not and his story-line is done. I wanted MORE of Jack in all three of the other movies so a movie dominated by CJS will make me very happy. I love that Jack's "love interest" isn't some screamie teen with a daddy complex but a full-fledged woman who has a past. Do I care about the mermaid subplot? Eh, remains to be seen. Pearl come to life? Cool! Witty repartee between Jack and various characters new and old? That's what I'm looking for. As I said, if this film is half as good as CotBP, I'll be going to see it as often as I can.

Oh, and it's Blackbeard who says he's a bad man in reply to Phillip telling him "You're killing her!" He is, you know.

Besides, how can Phillip compete with Will? We all know that Will is Jack's one twue love.:)

From: [identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com
I wouldn't say I'm looking forward to it so much as I'm curious and will definitely go see it at least once. I don't dislike the idea of it, but it'll have to do some work to match CotBP for me (well, actually, it never will do THAT because that's what got me into the fandom and writing it, and I'm not doing that again). So I'm not negative on it. But I am very curious about how Phillip is played.

Yeah, Phillip is hard to watch since he's basically Pseudo-Will.

Since you didn't mention this earlier, I'm not sure you've seen this:
