To be honest, picking someone you think is too hideous to look at or get used to over time is probably a bad idea. They're probably going to pick up on your distaste at some point, and that just makes things worse. On the other hand, picking someone just for their looks is a mistake because if you think you may want to stay with them for a long time, they're going to age and possibly lose the part of their appearance you like the best. So you really need qualities that will age better than looks, whether your preferences include humor, seriousness, whimsy, responsibility, easygoing, argumentative (not abusive - just strong-willed), etc.
