Of kitties and companions

Just a paeon to my cat Sly ... who is laying on the couch next to me as I type on my borrowed laptop (thanks, Mom) this fine night ... er, morning?
I have lived alone for many years and have figured out long before now that I am happiest that way, not being nagged constantly about where I'm going, or being interrupted by someone else being noisy or annoying. I like being alone; it's doubtful I'd marry or shack up at this point, old as I am (ha!). But like other humans, I like companionship, and I get that best from Sly.
I've had him since he was born to a stray just outside my front door (near the bushes) almost seven years ago -- that was back when I had to take care of him and his entire litter and their mother for three months. She carted them off into the woods and Sly was the only one to come back and stay ... so I let him adopt me. He's a good cat, who occasionally still has the kitten about him, knocking shit over and waking me up in annoying ways WAYYY too early in the morning to be let out, no matter the weather (of course, if it's cold, he makes me get up, drag-ass to the back door, unlock and open it, only to look at me like "I'm not going out there, you dumb bitch").
But he purrs as only Jack or Will can, and he's probably cheaper to keep than either of those pretty boys. ;-)

Date: 2004-01-12 09:08 am (UTC)I would rather live with a cat than a man. (sigh) And so I do.
Love to Sly, because I know I'd fall in love with him on principle.

Date: 2004-01-12 02:31 pm (UTC)I spent WAY too much money on this cat at the vet's last year. He fell really sick in March and we spent two months back and forth at the vet's about every other day without ever figuring out precisely why he was throwing up all the time and refusing to eat or drink regularly (although he did test out anemic, for what that's worth). I ended up having to change his food ($8 a bag) and give him bottled water, which is certainly a lot cheaper than future medical bills.
Kitties are SO much better than dogs. They're not nearly as demanding -- I can go out of town for a week or two and send someone in to give him food regularly -- and he suits my personality better than any dog I could have ...
