It appears lower gas prices might not be the only benefit of the economic downturn. I called Comcast to cancel cable and phone today and just keep the Internet access, since I'm shelling out about $107 a month for all 3 and I don't use the phone and can live without cable TV.

The guy tells me Internet alone is $59; OK, not far off what I expected. Then he says for a trial period of 9 months, he can give me Internet and cable for $66. Since it still works out about $30 less than what I'm paying and isn't much more than Internet alone, I took it. I guess they're desperate to keep customers, what with foreclosures cutting off service and people deciding food and gasoline is more important than cable TV, and cell phones replacing land lines.

Now, I wonder if I can have similar success with my landlord on not raising the rent so much next year ...

At least you don't have to give up MSNBC just yet.

And, good luck with that landlord.
