Johnny Depp is becoming the new face of Walt Disney Studios.

Yeah, a bold statement. But true, it would appear. One the one hand, "Ranger" is being written by the Disaster Twins - but they're only disasters on sequels, so the fact this is a first movie is probably going to be good. ;-)

On the other hand, POTC4? *grimaces*

Interesting about the casting, though - technically, he IS Native American (and enough so apparently that he actually qualifies as Cherokee by Census standards, I believe I read somewhere). And there are fuller-blooded actors who would undoubtedly also fill out the role adequately ... the question, though, is could they do it like Depp could? The man has a knack for uniqueness and for turning a buck at the box office - I suspect that was the biggest factor in casting here.

Although, I gotta tell you - if people got pissed off at the cannibal scenes in DMC, they're probably not going to be any happier with anything he does speech-wise as Tonto, unless the character is VASTLY updated from his TV origins.

Now my question is: Who is playing the Lone Ranger?

I grimace about another PotC movie, and have no idea what Disaster Twins is, but Alice in Wonderland? *squee* Totally has nothing to do with Johnny Depp, just love the idea of an Alice adaption.

Actually, that should be "Terror Twins" - it's my affectionate nickname for Ted & Terry. :-D

I, too, am somewhat more intrigued by this Alice in Wonderland business :3

(They've got to update the Tonto role though, GOT to. There's no way they can possibly conceive of doing through with this idea if they don't.) I'm gonna say I wouldn't mind about Depp not being a more full-blooded Native American because as a rule, I don't care as long as the actor is at least of the same race or conceivably appears to be of the ethnicity they mean to depict (the fuss over Zhang Ziyi playing a Japanese woman just made me roll my eyes). Except.. I don't particularly think he looks the part either. BUT then look at all the ethnic groups Antonio Banderas gets cast in that no one raises a stink about... [/tangent] I'm sure Depp will, as ever, be awesome.

I'm confused by most film casting anymore.

As for Johnny being Cherokee enough to qualify for it on the Census, so is my pale ass.

He did a convincing role as an American Indian in The Brave, so I have all the confidence in him that he'll do so with this one too.

But, that is left to be seen and my confidence hardly matters much :D

Oh, I have no questions about his ability to play anyone or anything.

...aaand reading that again, out of the movie-oriented context that I had my mind in, I understood you wrong. Sorry about that.

Johnny's maternal grandmother was Cherokee, but I have no idea how Census qualifies people as anything, so I'll just shut up now :)

It's OK. I figured you had misunderstood.

Census qualifications is 1/16th of a race.

Guess who?

Gee, the Lone Ranger....tall, dark and handsome. Or so he was as Clayton Moore. And quick with a gun.

Johnny will have some catching up to do if my dream casting for this could possibly come to fore.

:-P

Oddly, I was just thinking a certain other dark-haired fellow would look good in blue fringe, myself ...

Please, no. Just no. We'll leave it at that.

I'm worried about Pirates 4 myself. My favorite characters won't be in it, unless they make it a prequel, then we might see Bootstrap and Davy Jones.

But really... part of the things that made those films was the chemistry between the cast members.

After some series of convulsing violently, going to denial and then some more convulsions, I arrived at a point that makes POTC4 the best goddamn idea ever; There will be more pictures of Jack Sparrow, more Jack-speech, more Jack-everything and, well, more Jack, full stop.

Right now I can't understand what could possibly be wrong with that :D

I'll take this opportunity and stop whining about POTC4, although I'm sure the convulsions will come back once the rumours of the script start trickling in.

And yea, I just want the pics from this Disney-hoohaa-thingie. I want Jack in a mask-pictures NOW! *G*

Mad Hatter! Why not just make ALL my dreams come true while your at it?

Tonto didn't wear a mask.

In the Disney-event where all these movies were announced, Jack Sparrow appeared on stage with a mask on, and that would be the object of my current cravings :)

" more pictures of Jack Sparrow, more Jack-speech, more Jack-everything and, well, more Jack, full stop"

That was my thinking about the sequels! I still can't completely regret them.

Personally, I'd love a POTC 4 if it involves lots of Jack and Barbossa.

Mad Hatter, yes. Tonto ... I don't know.

Considering the way he was in DMC, I'm not sure more Jack is necessarily a good thing.

I say they do what I do: a retcon, and pretend the sequels never happened.

Who should play the Lone Ranger? I think they should bring back Chad Michael Murray. He played LR in the WB's version, which was supposed to be a series. Why I want him to reprise that role? Because it would be hilarious to watch him try to be a stone-jawed stoic while still maintaining his One Tree Hill vibe and I would take bets during the entire film over when Johnny would just lose his cool and punch the blond bastard in the face. But, then, that's just my twisted humor. =D
