I think Orlando Bloom should replace Ledger (as someone will HAVE to) as Joker for the next Batman movie. It'd be a great way for him to prove himself on a large scale; he really IS that good an actor, when given the chance to stretch - I believe - and he's the same basic physical type. (For anyone who doesn't believe me about the ability thing - go rent "Ned Kelly." Ledger is good, but honestly, Bloom upstages him.)

Plus, I can imagine he and Bale would have great chemistry.

Yep, I think it.

BTW, totally as an aside: I totally expect to see Gordon icons at some point with "Why So Sirius?" on them.

Ah, now Orlando would make me happily watch a Batman film.

I'm not a huge fan of the current incarnation (Keaton is still my personal favorite), but I'd see about anything Orlando was in. *G*

Funnily enough just the other day a friend and I were talking about Ned Kelly and how Bloom steals every scene he's in.

I've not seen DK (or any of the Batman films for that matter), but I would love to see Orlando trying something different. And like you said it would be a great chance for him to prove himself.

He needs to do some role of ambiguity or villainy. I know he's capable of it, but critics need to know he's capable of it. More importantly, HE needs to get in touch with that part of himself for the screen, IMO.

As someone on my flist said, Ledger as the Joker turned in the sort of performance that an actor would almost have to demolish himself achieve. DO YOU WANT ORLANDO BLOOM TO DIE??? D:

Eh ... no disrespect, but if Ledger died of his own demons with the role, I would rather he just not have taken on the role and left it to someone less capable. As artists (of differing media), you and I both know an artist can be ruled by a muse ... or, they can listen to the muse for a while and then back away and do other things. Given his previous performances, Ledger gave no signs of insanity or anything that seemed to indicate he couldn't handle any role ... I'm guessing he simply made a very poor judgment about mixing or taking the wrong dosage of medication. (It actually happens a lot, just not among famous people.)

Playing the Joker didn't kill Heath. That's just a bunch of rumors. He took on the role and had a good time playing Joker. According to many of his cast makes, when the cameras stopped rolling, Heath was Heath again. He knew it was just a job. Besides, TDK finished filming way before he died.

Clearly. (Wait, about the next actor to take up the Joker mantle dying?)

Oh please....

Does anyone seriously think that Ledger would even get Oscar buzz for acting in a comic book movie if he were still alive?

I think people are blowing his performance way out of perspective because he's dead, not because he acted himself to death.

I'm guessing you're referring to another comment in this entry, and not to me directly *G*. And this is why I suggest my own idea for a replacement - the character didn't die, he WILL have to be replaced if Nolan wants to bring him back. Would I offer up my beloved Orlando if I thought it would kill him? :-D

But actually, it IS a good performance - anytime I can forget who is in the role and that it's just the character, at least, I think one is. I know the casting decision and the dailies were being discussed before Ledger died, so there's a good chance he would still be getting these good reviews even if he were here to read them - though I'm sure that does figure into some level of it.

Have you seen the film?

He's incredible. I was irritated by all the "oscar buzz" until I saw his perfomance.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. There would be an uproar to end them all, though, if this was the case, even though most fanboy reviewers I've read give Orlando a fair shake (one of the Aint It Cool News guys recently watched the Dir's Cut of KoH and was quite complimentary to the lead). However, I hear that they are retiring the Joker for this series, which, personally, is my preference. Even though his last line hints at more, I think this is a case where the performance and the film are so good, why take the risk of ruining it with a lackluster follow-up (certain Pirate films come to mind)?

The villain they are talking about is The Riddler, and I think Orlando would be an amazing choice for him. It would also give him the chance to create a character of his own and not be stuck trying to match a performance that is already near mythic in reverence. I mean, can you imagine someone else trying to play Capt. Jack? Ledger's Joker is iconic, and OB deserves better than trying to top him.

Though he *is* far, far better in Ned Kelly! It just aired on Canadian TV and they cut out all the good Orlando scenes, which was the only reason I was watching. I was livid!

Just my 2 cents,

I was just thinking Nolan probably would bring Joker back since he didn't die - if he doesn't, that'd be a new twist on a sequel, definitely. I think Orlando deserves his own chance, too, but I was just trying to think of someone I think could replace Ledger and both be of a physical type and a good actor to get into the role. Plus, OB needs a villain role; he just does.

Oh, I definitely agree that OB needs a villain role. I almost wonder if this proposed remake of Le Cercle Rouge is something in that vein - a bunch of amoral thieves trying to one-up each other through a series of heists. I actually always envisioned him in a Tom Ripley kind of role, where he can exploit his natural charm in a realistic yet Machivellian fashion. I don't think he's ever really exploited his innate charisma for a role yet - he seems to feel the need to play it earnest, whereas you can tell he's far more mercurial in real life.

I have my own theory on what character should be the villain in the next one, but I'll save that for the review I'm working on. ;)

I personally think that no one else should take up the role. Heath has just brought it to a level that will be hard to match/top. Besides, I don't see them reusing any villains even if they live. *spoilers* Sure Scarecrow got a cameo, but I doubt Nolan would be willing to do more than that.
