Airlines can fail, Wal-Mart can wobble, and gas can keep climbing. But when one of the most major, cheapeast forms of a little sin and stress relief sell out to an overseas beverage company - something it never needed to do even during the Depression - you know even worse times are sliding toward your country FAST.

I don't have particularly strong feelings of love and flowers toward Barack Obama; I'll be honest. His lack of experience bothers me, I'm not sure he'll be able to get the votes to do the things he wants to promise. And his eagerness to please the nutjob evangelicals for a few votes by infringing on basic medical rights for the female half of the population scares the hell out of me. But I'm sure as fuck not going to vote for McCain a sixth term for Reagan. He didn't have enough of a brain - literally - to run the country well the first time around, and his proteges and hangers-on have done absolutely nothing to improve it beyond padding their own bank accounts. In fact, with Clinton's help (on NAFTA), they've pretty much driven the whole country into the ground.

You have put into this post my exact thoughts!

Seriously? I hadn't heard that. I thought the right was hating on his quote that he wouldn't be against abortion if one of his daughters made "a mistake." (Calling a child "a mistake" had them frothing at the mouth)

I'm disappointed by his pandering about the faith-based initiatives, but I still think he's the only hope we've got. Every last shred of McCain's being is owned by lobbyists of the Enron sort (Phil Gramm anyone?).

I'm exaggerating a bit for effect. I'm worried that he has one stance on allowing abortion ... and then says "but not this." Then he suggests trying a variation on Bush's faith-based governmental programs (because we know how well church and state mix). This to me says he's trying to pander to evangelicals. (And I may be harsh here, but what the evangelicals have wanted and supported has run this country for eight years and we see how well THAT'S gone.)

I don't see the problem with his statement. Can you point it out to me?

The faith-based thing is a total pander. But, I guess if I wanted a Flying Spaghetti Monster charity, I could get government funding!

The problem is with placing *any* restriction on late-term abortions, but that's just what I think. Women who carry a fetus that long are not going to abort because they're "blue" or on a whim, or they've changed their minds - we're talking a tiny, slender, skinny little percentage of such instances. This kind of abortion is usually NOT wanted by the mother but is usually medically necessary to save a least one life. (I have a friend who's been a doctor for 20 years and has a specialty in obstetrics; I've heard the stories about the difference between doing this kind of abortion and not doing it when it was needed ... the latter didn't end well.) I don't like being treated like I have half a brain because of my gender, is all, and that I can't make these decisions for myself.

Well, Obama did say that there should be "a strict, well-defined exception for the health of the mother." So I'm still not seeing your argument, except that you don't want any limits of any kind on abortion? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding you.

I am pro-choice, but I do think there have to be some limits. Surely five months is enough time for anyone to make up their mind.

Actually, that is my point. "Strict and well-defined" isn't something I'm keen on a bunch of male legislators deciding for my body. (I did warn you this was my opinion only. *G*)

Oddly, if you go by the polls, if you line up five people, your still going to find one that thinks Bush is doing a good job. Scarier yet, if you line up two, one of them is going to think Grandpa McCan't-Find-His-Ass-With-Both-Hands would be a wise choice for president.

If you wonder about the wisdom of JohnQ voter, consider this: given all that they knew (or should have known), they elected Bush AGAIN!!

We can only hope this country has enough fingernails left to be able to hang on for another 6 months. It's not looking good for the home team!

Anyone see the cartoon from some East coast newspaper with Obama dressed in Muslim clothes and Michelle Obama with an afro? I heard about it on NPR, but couldn't listen long enough to understand what it referenced (if anything, sounded like plain nastiness to me) or which paper it was in.

I'm not getting in to the abortion debate. I know it's important, but frankly no longer affects me (it'd be the second coming if I got pregnant at my age and um, lack of relationship status) and I've seen so many steps backward for our civilization anyway regarding so many things that if it were outlawed again I'd probably just laugh. We have more female lawmakers in America than any time in previous history and they can't protect abortion rights? We're already so far up a shit creek at this point, one more shovelful won't matter.

I think this is what you're referencing. What do you think? *G*

I'm not sure who they're trying to appease - but that's my problem with Obama. QUIT APPEASING THE MYTHOLOGY NUTJOBS. They're had their chance to mix church and state and run the country and it was rather spectacularly proven it does. Not. Work. Here.
