what lit crit people call a coded female character, ie. an ostensibly male character who is symbolically female and easily identified with by women readers.
There seems to be at least one of those characters in nearly every Anime ever made :P
In seriousness though, thanks for saying what I always find myself saying to people razzing on how the uke phenomenon in yaoi is "making Man A into a woman". Only as usual, you did it better. *shakes wee fist and stomps her foot*
ETA: I'm going to amend that to the uke archetype as western fic writers interpret them. I believe there's a difference, anyway.
In the case of the Colorado PotC Cosplayers I know, 3/5 of the Jacks are female. And excepting the voice, which we can't do much about, we make better Sparrows than the guys. That's very sad.
