You know what I'd do if I wanted to make a point to SUP? I'd pick a day to spam the shit out of the system, and ask people to post once, twice, three times an hour. As often as possible, just to try to overload the servers. (Of course, that does take work, as opposed to doing ... nothing.)

Abstaining from posting won't do anything to catch their attention. And the up side is, if SUP gets pissed off about an overload, I have the best comeback ever: "You want more customers. We're trying to make sure you're prepared for the extra traffic, is all."

I think both should take place on the same day. That way people on both sides of the fence can protest LJ together! That'll show 'em!

HUZZAH for solidarity!!

Well ... let's see ...

Three-quarters of fandom refuses to post.

The other quarter posts four times as much as usual.

I'm no math whiz, but ...

Methinks this is better idea than the boycott. If the reason of the boycott is that ad banner thingy you mentioned, a sudden drop in the posting statistics looks to the SUP that "oh damn, we're losing customers -- now, we need even more advertisers to get our bills paid!!" :p

Or then not. Feh, I've still been too lazy to educate myself about the whole snafu...

Honestly, I'm going to go about my Friday/Saturday (as most of Friday US will be my Saturday) as normal. If I think of something to post, then I'm going to post it. If I have nothing to say, then I'll be silent.

I have many accounts though, so I could easily spam the day away :P

See this has more appeal to me if I was inclined to protest, partly because it seems more logical, and partly because the moment I'm told 'don't do', my perverse, contrary nature wants to do that more than anything.

I would be so rubbish if I had to take a vow of silence. However, I have no trouble at all being quiet for hours if I choose to be.

Um, yes, I have a problem with being told what to do *nods*

Heck, most of the time I'm not posting on LJ anyway. Reading yes, posting... not so much, I tend to post in spits and spurts. Besides that, the NCAA tourney starts today and Festival at the station is FINALLY over as of last night, so I intend to indulge in as much basketball as I possibly can this weekend. And maybe finally get my muses to cooperate with me, and actually help me write, instead of just throwing up new, "Ooh lookie!! SHINY!!" at me.

And I agree with you, the only thing that will get LJ's attention is probably an overload - which I doubt they'll handle any communication on that properly to start with - or a seriously mass exodus of paid accounts. Which I'm not really inclined at this point to leave LJ, in spite of their lack of communication skills. LJ for me is easy to use and I generally like how everything is laid out. I've tried MySpace, I hate it. To me, MySpace is clunky and not very user friendly. I've never posted on it, and the only reason I still have a MySpace account is to keep up with a couple of music groups I like who have official accounts there. {Shrugs} I'm just not the type of person who needs multiple blogs on multiple services, or multiple services to IM people.

So what you're proposing, essentially, is a DOS attack on our own (ie: LJ's) servers?

I'm still of two minds about the blackout thing. On the one hand, I have plans for this evening, so probably won't be posting anyway, and I'd be doing it more to support my friends who are invested in it than for any other reason. On the other, I have stuff I want to do that involves accessing my LJ-archive and I honestly don't think the "strike" is is going to make a significant difference.

I suppose I should at least find out what time I'm supposed to stop posting at, huh?

This is the link everyone is referring to, which details "our demands" as well as the time(s) everyone should strike.

This is also the place where we got the best quote of the whole deal: "...commenting on the news post -- even with cat macros -- just isn't powerful enough!"

If you read the thread (and others discussing this issue), you'll see a GREAT number of people eager to participate in the boycott, because...

- LJ shouldn't eliminate free accounts!
- People with Basic accounts shouldn't have to lose their accounts!
- LJ is banning any discussion of [homosexuality, depression, fanfiction, etc.] in comms and journals!
- LJ will delete your journal if you have any of them in your interests!
- Fanfiction is banned now at LJ!

None of these are true, of course. But you'll also notice the person(s) organizing or supporting the boycott are not exactly going out of their way to correct anyone. What's a little misinformation, if it gets the numbers?

You know LJ sees this too, and this will figure in to whatever credibility this "boycott" has, if it even makes a blip in their stats at all.

Anyway, I rambled, sorry. The information you need is either at that link or in her LJ, she's got it listed for all the time zones.

It's all ready having an impact though. So many people are saying that it won't do anything, but it's all ready brought a lot of bad press to LJ and now they're talking about reinstating the basic account option and they've removed the interest filters. It's all ready working.

This is a case that if I turn out to be wrong, I'm glad to be, and nobody loses. It's just not what my gut is telling me right away, though.
