crafty food, take one
Jul. 6th, 2010 10:30 pmThe only other woman in my department at work is having her first baby, so being the only other woman in her department, I volunteered to organize a baby shower at work. Now - I don't do games or gossip or any of that smeg; I told people in the office to bring food for a potluck at lunch, and promised to provide the cake and ice cream, and I got the woman a few small gifts.
Well, rather than buy a cake, I thought I'd make it myself - I used to bake and decorate them in high school to make extra money, and for a summer or two in college. Granted, it's been a long time, but you don't forget the basic lessons you learn. Once that was decided, I thought I would do cupcakes; then I had to decide on a theme. Since she likes farms, I decided to do some farm animals and mix in the colors she's using for her nursery. FURTHER, rather than simply drawing animals on cupcakes, I thought I'd make 3-D critters to put on top of half of the cupcakes. This means experimenting with something I've never used before: Fondant.
( A brief lesson on fondant and a couple of photos so far )
