small movies are sometimes awesome
Apr. 25th, 2010 01:33 pmIf I've learned anything from my brief stints as an entertainment freelancer/writer during my journalism career, it's that small movies are sometimes among the best, especially when it comes to comedy. I can point to two advance studio copies off the top of my head still on my shelf, that I've watched more than once because they were FUNNY. So in that spirit, I ordered "Back in Business" from Netflix to watch, as it has Chris Barrie in it and he just hasn't been in too many movies.
Now I admit with small movies I worry they'll be crap because, really, wouldn't it have been in wide release if it wasn't? But it turns out to be an unfair judgment in this case, because it's a clever, adorable little film with lots of great comedy and quite a bit of acting talent. Will, who is an English Lord, is also a former con man and actor, but he and his partner in crime, Tom, "retired" years ago. In the movie, Will's niece, Fiona, and her con partner, Travis, are working with Will to steal plans for a new space rover from the British Space Agency and use them to pit Russian and Chinese buyers against one another for the highest "sale." When they run into trouble, Will calls on his old partner, Tom - who just happens to be Travis's father, as well - to help out. Thrown into the mix is Jarvis, Will's butler, a retired cop who is still in touch with Scotland Yard trying to get Will arrested. The two older con men still know how to hatch a plan, and Fiona's got her uncle's touch, but for poor, dumb, well-meaning Travis, the apple has fallen far, FAR from the tree.
I had a lot of good snorts over this one. If you get a chance and have 90 minutes, I highly recommend it for some quality entertainment.
