SHIT MAY ACTUALLY GET DONE
Jan. 22nd, 2009 09:09 pmAnd I don't mean the kind of shit that runs downhill, that's gotten done for the past several years. I mean "shit" as in "bad stuff that has to be fixed."
I'm as impressed as anyone that Obama is taking such decisive measures early to close Gitmo, to make government more transparent, to curtail lobbyist influence and to bolster the State Department's mission of diplomacy. My mother joked, "He'd better slow down; he won't have anything to do next week."
But the fact is, at some point, things WILL grind to a halt. It will look like he's doing nothing, for probably a long time, while the economy continues to plummet and the Iraqi invasion/occupation drags on. Supporters will grumble; detractors will gloat and smirk and generally be assholes. THIS IS NORMAL. (People are already bitching about Gitmo taking up to a year to close.) Life will hurt. It will be tough. There will be times he does deserve criticism - from you, or his detractors, or everyone.
GET OVER IT. A good president isn't supposed to be popular or a rock star. A good president is supposed to be a good president - smart, tough, flexible, educated, and willing to change when absolutely necessary.
Obama is not Pepsi or summertime. He's the president. He will not always be fizzy or warm. Life is hard. Expect it.
