Let's remember what we're about please?
Jan. 20th, 2009 12:28 pmYes, I am super-happy we're rid of Bush, et. al. No, I don't mind that we still have Gates as Defense Secretary; he's been one of the few voices of reason in the past administration, and there's no need to punish because someone is of a different party, IF they have the knowledge and the sense to do the job properly and work with those with differing political philosophy.
I don't even mind that Hillary is Secretary of State. Obama seems to be of the "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" school of thought, and I heartily agree. (Besides, between her and Kerry in the Senate, she was more likely to vote with the Republicans. There was strategy to Obama's choice, I believe. I don't think he's as "idealistic" or "hippy dippy" as people think he is. I think he's fairly practical, actually.)
Let me tell you a story: A couple of years ago, I defriended somebody in fandom because I noticed a fight going on in the comments of one of her entries, where several of her close friends surrounded and started pounding on somebody else who had commented there. It occurred to me that it was HER journal and she should not be allowing that to happen, even at the risk of making herself unpopular and de-BNFing herself ... and yet, she sat back and did nothing to smooth or calm it. I said at that point I would not allow that to happen in my journal - and I won't. I don't mind if people want to disagree, I don't mind if they want to go ALL CAPS to make a point, I don't care if they want to bitch at me - AS LONG AS IT'S DONE CIVILLY. I know real world concerns deserve passion and defense, but I want no name-calling, no finger-pointing, no biting. Be careful of broad generalizations (says the woman who's been known to make one or six herself); I have all persuasions reading my f-list.
My cats absolutely hated each other when Frank moved in 8 months ago. They eventually learned to get along and can even be in the same room without clawing each other up now. Please be better than my cats. :-D
I've disabled comments and will borrow from Obama to explain why - when he'd make speeches and bring up McCain and the crowd would start booing, he'd shake his head and wave them off. "We don't need that," he'd say. "We just need to go vote." Well, I don't need explanations or apologies or indignancy - I understand where everybody was coming from. We just need to be better than that, and so do I. We're an ongoing work in progress.
