Inspired by a friend (she knows who she is), this is my response to the "My POTC fandom ..." posts showing up on [livejournal.com profile] potc_dogwatch. I'm keeping it here instead of posting it there, because it's not 100-percent happy vibes, and I'm sure nobody wants to have their mood sobered who doesn't already read this journal and know what a realist I can be. It's not terribly long, and not as negative as you might presume.

My POTC fandom has increased my dissatisfaction with elements of the movies, in particular DMC (and some AWE spoilers), because I've seen what can be written in fandom and some of it makes me think Bruckheimer's paying the wrong two people the big bucks. Sure, they helped originate the characters on paper, but there are instances in entertainment of another writer taking over a series and doing a better job than the originator(s). Ted and Terry are extremely good *ideas* people ... but they either need to leave the writing, plotting, and fleshed-out characterizations to someone else, or put a decade between each sequel so they can decide properly what to produce. Stringing together a bunch of symbolism is something bored fanfic writers do when they're brainstorming for the actual storyline.

My POTC fandom has a LOT of J/E in it. However, I understand it is not those writers' jobs to stop producing, but mine to write more of what I want to read regularly. It's why I write fanfic at all, why I ever did write, and rather than muse on what I may have lost through the sequels, I should focus on what I've gained, character- and settings-wise.

My POTC fandom has squabbling, but it's localized and not on the epic scale to "outsiders" that defines, for example, HP fandom. (I use that example because I'm NOT in HP fandom and pretty much all I hear about it is that it's filled with death threats and flame wars.) My fandom also allows squabbling without trying to flatten it with an iron fist, which means most little flames are doused pretty quickly through lack of oxygen.

My POTC fandom and I don't always agree. However, it does force me at times to read something I wouldn't otherwise, and consider it on its own merits rather than just a straight "is this in my interests?" In that, the fandom has helped me expand my brain.

My POTC fandom takes up WAY too much of my time. ;-)

Dude. So [livejournal.com profile] metalkatt and I are watching a few scenes in the middle of ROTK and it occurs to us THIS is Will's bloodline. Aragorn fights like a mofo and can lead anyone to anything, AND knows how to talk to the dead. Legolas has some mad fine motor skilz (and check out those elven blacksmiths! They can fix anything!). Their kids must've really liked each other. ;-)

And check out how they knocked over those pirate boats ...

Of course, it has to stop through Balian first. Possibly the perfect combination of Aragorn and Legolas, blunt force coupled with graceful movement and intelligence. (And the blacksmithing!)
