A few years ago, my sister and [livejournal.com profile] metalkatt got me into reading this series of books by Piers Anthony called the "Incarnations of Immortality." There's War, God, Satan, Nature, etc. in the 7-book series. I wondered if anyone else had read these?

Anthony leans a bit sexist in the later books, which I overlooked for the sake of the stories themselves. I think his first book is probably the best of the lot, On A Pale Horse, which - as you might guess from the title - is about Death. It starts off with a normal guy, Zane, having a bad day which goes from bad to worse when an attacker comes into his home. Only after he kills the invader in self-defense is Zane informed that he has murdered Death and, in doing so, must take his place as the Grim Reaper. He gets a cloak, his own mansion in the clouds, and a steed that changes into whatever he needs to traverse any surface to make his collections around the world, be it car, boat, or animal. While he gets some guidance from the other Incarnations, he learns the job on the fly, begins a relationship with a mortal woman, and even tricks Satan into not destroying the human race.

Good book. Highly recommended.

I started reading that series because "Dead Like Me" was roughly (ROUGHLY) based on On a Pale Horse.

I think I liked reading Bearing an Hourlglass which is about Time. Can't recall much about the others.

I think the Time novel was the second in the series. And yes, it was very good as well.

I didn't know that about "Dead Like Me." For some reason, Zane strikes me more as Mason than either George or Rube. *snicker*

Oh yeah, definitely! Though, I'm not sure I can see Zane shoving illegals up his bum!

Yes, I've read that entire series, and it is really interesting. Although Piers tends to oversimplify and make things all about sex...

Hey, fandom does too. Any fandom, it seems.

That's true! But as you said, he's pretty sexist.

Yep, read them all while in college, actually. Also read his Tarot series, which was fairly decent. It's been years since I've read any Piers Anthony, though.

Read those many years ago. I was quite young, I remember being pretty surprised by all the sex in a fantasy novel, heh. And yeah, sexist, I remember all his descriptios of women of were pretty interesting.

I adore that series! Read them ages ago and treasure my hardbacks. :)

Piers has the tendency to make things all about marriage or children. He ruined the Xanth series by doing that. But I think the Incarnations were great. I loved For Love of Evil. :)

My favorite was For Love of Evil, as well as And Eternity I read them all in high school. I pretty much ignored all the stuff and read the books for my own enjoyment, a way to shut off my brain. It's been so long I don't remember much about them, so I guess I'll have to re-read them.

According to his website, this month, Under a Velvet Cloak, the 8th book in the series is to be released, but I've not found anything about it from any site.
