So everybody's heard about it by now, no doubt, but the idea of Ralph Fiennes reading Voldy/Harry fanfic makes my eyelids curdle just a little bit. Not in the good way. It'll make somebody's iPod podfic list. (I like the comment "well, I can cross that off my bucket list.")

Just ... no, man. NO. Fanfic is like fight club. Don't talk about it to the entertainers. (And to answer your question, no, not even if Chris Barrie HIMSELF read it in voices, would I want my porny fanfic brought up on some public exposure like this. YIIIIIII .....)

THAT'S JUST NOT RIGHT, SIR.

I couldn't watch it. I'm not a fan of Harry Potter fan-fiction to begin with, when I like something I don't feel the need to embellish, I'm more of a fan-fiction void-filler for my own satisfaction but I would erase everything, change my identity and bolt before I let a performer read anything out in public!

I completely agree, its JUST NO RIGHT. *shudders*

I like the Fight Club analogy. Fanfic is definitely something that we Do Not Talk About with outsiders.

I love the Fiht Club analogy! Perfect!
And, no, it would freak me out if Orlando orKeira Knightley read my fic. Gives me the squeaks (bad ones!!) just thinking of it.

The thought of Chris, Craig or Doug reading my fic makes me cringe. And the thought of Chris reading the sex scenes out loud with his precise diction... *Help* *Runs and hides*

Good God, no. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is wrong with you people? (you as in the general sense, of course)

It was bad enough during Lord of the Rings, Billy and Dom were at a red carpet event in New York, and you could see in Dom's hand, a fan-done graphic picture. I recognize the design so I know who did it, but not if they were the ones who specifically gave it to the actors. Anyway, the red carpet event was broadcast worldwide, so the world got to see Dom showing Billy the artwork of Pippin and Merry in a rather naked embrace and then talking about it. *facepalm*

I would have a heart attack if anyone in authority read/distributed my stories or vids. That includes writers, producers, actors, anyone. Rule 1, you don't talk about fanfic!

Worse,at a PAJAMA PARTY?!?! I wouldn't read fan-fic at a Pajama Party with my own friends, let alone on TV (even if it's cable). Andy whats-his-name should be ashamed of himself.

LOL just saw it on my flist. I could not actually believe that was him the first time (not least because he was slighter than I'd imagined). And then I was all OH NO THEY DIDN'T XD

(I can be amused, because I'm not in HP fandom. If it were one of 'my' fandoms I'd be screaming and running, it's true.)

Hmmm, I'm the one lone dissenter here. Shoving fanfiction at an actor is tasteless, sure, and lots of bat-shit insane fans don't know that there are serious boundaries that should not be crossed (witness the insanity that frequents the SPN crowd), however, you know, I've written fanfiction that I'm pretty proud of. And while I might visually have cues that feed into the story, these stories aren't about the actors. They are about the characters. What I would find humiliating is seeing comments that I have made about the actor's and their physical attributes because the line between actor and character is non-existant. My fanfiction? That's just storytelling and nothing I've written would I find embarassing. Especially in the case of the HP stuff, where there are writers that can write rings around JKR.

I should direct you to this Red Dwarf discussion site - its a semi-official, but not really, site that's pretty visible and known to fans and TPTB. You should see the derision a few of those guys (not TPTB so far as I know, just fans) have for the slash- writing fangirls in the fandom, even though as far as I know we've never gotten snide on their discussions, in our LJ area. I'll wager there isn't one of them who would see any of our best fics as superior to the worst of the show's episodes.

And, that's okay - because our space is our space and we don't try to push it at the creators or actors or crew or suchlike. I've been doing fanfic for 20 years, and it's never been about being noticed in relation to the canon writers; it's for fun. And when I do something for fun and for free, I really don't want to hear scorn from fans who think I'm doing it to best the creator or messing negatively with the material. The less mainstream notice I get for fanfic, the more fun it stays. I don't know how to make that sound logical, it just IS to me, and IMO.

Of course not. Having said that, I will point out that you've written some damn fine stuff and it should be recognized as such. Just because it's fun doesn't mean that it's not GOOD. I'm rather rabid on the subject of this derision of fanfiction. Like it's cheap and we should just dismiss it because it's not "original."

It's different when talking about an older show. But current media recognizes fandom as a driving force. Witness SPN, and the latest Sherlock has several shoutouts to fandom. The days when it was all hush-hush and secret are over. Media sees fandom as a sales tool. All these conventions (like ComicCon and DragonCon) are feeding into this recognition as fandom as something to cultivate. Of course, it's also about the money, but hey.

I'll wager there isn't one of them who would see any of our best fics as superior to the worst of the show's episodes.

Fuck their homophobic asses. Seriously. Their material is better because it's het; it's more *valid* beause its het? Do we really need to visit that sad, pathetic delusion? Is there a single post-DMC het story that is epic? That will be referred to again and again by rec sites, etc. Not one.

Yeah, if I'd written anything particularly porny (which I really haven't, steamy is as far as I've gotten - I tend to be more of a drama/hurt-comfort/character piece/pure crack-fic kind of writer and reader) I wouldn't want the actors or other Powers That Be reading my fanfic, I'd be way too embarrassed! Some actors do though, I'm remembering one stating in a panel that in his opinion his character would be the fracker, not the frackee, so to speak, in the pairing mentioned.

I try really hard to keep my real identity and my fandom identity separate for many reasons, and that's one of them. I'm not sure how well I'd handle it if I found that an actor had read one of my fanfics, but at least them not knowing who I really am would spare me any embarassment if they didn't like it, and also spare me the same if they did like it, because I'd probably be all, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! and a gibbering mess. :)

ETA: Which I should say there is one actor I've mentioned to that I write fanfic but that currently I'm attempting to concentrate more on my original writing, and currently I don't have anything out there that's for his show (am working on something off and on, but nothing ready for public consumption) and that actor does not know my fandom name, and so help me he won't find it out, at least not anytime soon! :)

I'm sorry I don't know Spanish well enough to reply in kind, though I did understand your question and I presume if you've read my stuff, you can understand this reply. The only fanfic I know I still have online doesn't include much TNG and is located on this journal at this link (http://veronica-rich.livejournal.com/183345.html). :-)
