FINALLY ... Bloomsy's doing something besides trying not to star in the tabloids with his girlfriend. He's picked up a bunch of good reviews at Sundance for his supporting role in "Sympathy for Delicious" and just started filming The Good Doctor, in which it looks like he'll finally get his hand at being a villain. I like how the review discusses his "indie profile" - and indeed, it looks like he's eschewed the big-budget swords-and-sandals epics for a while to concentrate on expanding his repertoire, character-wise. :-)

Here's a picture from TGD set, stolen with love from O-Love (and, apparently, ultimately from JustJared):

On my own front, still waiting to hear back from an editor on a suggestion I made for a magazine article/column ... *grits teeth*

Hmm. That looks like it has potential, though not as dark as I originally thought it might be. I agree it's nice to see him doing different sort of characters. Every actor needs to have their share of bad guys and otherwise dubious sorts. :)

It's nice to see him looking more normal too! Some of the pics I saw from Sympathy were just flat out weird. He'd look better with the hair off his forehead though.

I sort of wonder if the reason he's sidestepping offers for big formulaic roles and doing these movies instead - including ones where he just has a supporting role - is that these will let him experiment with different types of characters. No way would a studio make a big-budget film with him as the villain at this point in time, or doing drugs, or anything like that, IMO. I think he made his money and worked formulaic roles and gained his fame while the getting was good, in order to be able to pick and choose roles at his leisure someday.

I'm sure he's not done with big Hollywood, he's too young and with too good a career so far for that. I do agree though that he probably wanted to do movies for his own sheer interest or enjoyment for awhile, instead of big bucks. There isn't really any other way of showing people what he's capable of. Once he's proven that yes, he can handle more gritty roles and not just pretty boy characters he'll probably do bigger ones again.

Is it me, or does he seem to be following Johnny Depp's style a bit in what roles he chooses?

I think he did learn some valuable acting lessons from Johnny, actually. (Now I just hope the student can exceed the master and keep his mouth SHUT when he really ought to, a la the Roman Polanski mess! LOL)

Bit of scandal I missed? What did Johnny say, and about what?

I have no love for that hair-do.

True, but there's a long history in cinema, especially horror films, of giving the unsavory characters unattractive features ...

*Smirks* Which means the hair was the only thing they could work with in that regard. :P

Though really, I don't see the hair like that. It's bad, but unfortunately I'm used to seeing bad hair on actors even when they're not playing bad roles. Not to mention some of his own hairstyle choices. :P That's one of the reasons I really disliked his hair in Sympathy, I've just seen too many British actors with mops on their heads and it drives me nuts. The only time it ever worked was in LOTR, lol.

This doesn't seem like much of a horror though, at least based on what I read. Definately a bad guy, but not really horror so much. The necrophiliac doctor in Key West in the twenties is scarier then that.
