Or at least that's how I always thought of Bea Arthur, who died today at the age of 86. I know she had many other roles - I saw several (who can forget "History of the World Part 1" or "Maude"?) - but I'll always think of her chiefly as Dorothy Zbornak of "The Golden Girls."

"Dorothy" and "Ma" (the late, great Estelle Getty) are together in the afterlife at last. I hope somebody taped some cotton in the saints' ears so they don't get offended. :-D

Me too. My favorite grandma and I used to watch the GG when it was first-run back in the 80s - it was "wholesome" enough to satisfy her watching it with a teenager, and "racy" enough to make me laugh too. (Watching reruns now, I sometimes wonder how some of their remarks made it past the censors 20 years ago for prime time ... until I remember that parents in the 1980s actually seemed *better* about not wanting to foam-pad the world for their precious darlings.) But Grandma's been dead for several years, and now are half the Golden Girls. :-(

E.g. "nervous as a virgin at prison rodeo" (a favourite quote of a couple of friends of mine)

Awwww.

I can't say I watched much of Golden Girls, but I remember how ground-breaking it was for Maude to depict the main character (female, and Bea Arthur) even considering having an abortion. (And I'm pretty sure she went through with it, on the show.)

She was no shrinking violet. Cheers (to her)!

It is no longer available online, but several years ago, Bea was on the Comedy Central Roast of Pam Anderson and, for her part, Ms. Arthur read a bit from Pammy's book. I will forever laugh when I think of her dry, raspy voice talking of anal sex.

And, yes, the saints' ears must be burning!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

My favorite Bea Arthur line: "Did you bull---- last week?"

She will be missed.

My grandma hated Golden Girls for some reason. I, on the other hand, loved it. So sorry to hear she's gone.
