(fandom) What should be written?

F-listers in the POTC fandom - what do you want to see written in the fandom now that things are kind of slow and steady and there's room for newness and oldness and general stuff?

I don't mean what do you want from me; I just mean, overall, what is lacking in your fannish life? Particular kinds of stories? Particular kinds of essay? Particular kinds of art? Is there something you're wanting that you're just not seeing in any of the communities or active fans' LJs? Or is there something you're seeing that you want more of?

It's not like I'm authorized to take up a collection of suggestions or stories or anything. But I know a lot of you read this and figure maybe this would be a good place for people to see what others want.

I know I'm pretty much a lurker, but there are things that I would like to see. Like, for example, an essay detailing the relationship between Jack and Will. Either from a friendship standpoint (one could argue them to be frienemies) or from a slasher standpoint. Either way, it would be interesting to see what, exactly, it is that makes the pair so irresistible to us.

And I've always had a weakness for AUs, lol. Something with our fave pirates reincarnated or even just in a completely different setting than we've seen would be kind of cool. Can you imagine a story with Jack, Will, and Norrington as cops? I know, Jack wouldn't make that great a cop, but still. I dunno, I just think it would be fun to see stuff like that.

This has been done, actually - commodoresexual wrote a modern-day AU with Jack and James as cops (Will and Elizabeth were their respective siblings, I believe, and I don't recall what they were doing). Jack and Will were also in a band, so double AU points. Unfortunately she never finished it, but the few chapters online are great.

Oh, cool! I don't know, I've only ever read a handful of AU stories and I feel this is a fandom that would totally benefit from more, you know? But I need to check out the stories you mentioned. Sounds interesting, lol.

I've read Watching the Watcher. I'm a huge fan of Elayna's! But I haven't seen the other one. I'll need to read it!

I think I thought of it because I'm in the Stargate Atlantis fandom and they are so chock full of AUs, which is my favorite part. It would be nice to see that here, too, you know?

I know you weren't asking for "reviews" per se, but the best answer I could possibly give to your question would be rexluscus' Between Wind and Water (http://rexluscus.livejournal.com/313359.html). It's my entire wish-list in one fic. It's got history, shipboard adventure, Jack as conniving and competent (unlike that guy in *cough* certain sequels), James... (I'm not even going to start, I'll babble for three paragraphs). And beautiful, beautiful writing.

Anyway. More like that. LOTS more like that. Which, of course, is not realistic to hope for. But you asked!

I have a weakness for missing scenes--ones that fit with the films, but slightly change the way I watch the films. And Jack, lots and lots of Jack. But also some characters who don't get out as often as they should: Bill, Barbossa, Governor Swann, Beckett (being a character, not just having sadistic Navysex), Tia Dalma, Pintel, Ragetti. I don't have anything against Will or Elizabeth, it's just that they get plenty of attention already. Yeah, I know, so does Jack, but: Jack!

I'd kinda like to see more gen. You know, where the pairing isn't the be-all and end-all of the story. If a pairing is there, don't make it the main part of the whole story. Motivation of a character is fine, like with Will in CotBP, but the love story wasn't the entire thing.

Particular kinds of stories?

On top of the Immortal Captains, there's several other brain-food groups I crave for:

Stories set in historial events, be they significant, or insignificant, or something in between. Taken into account the possible (probable) immortality-aspect, there's some 200-300 years of living history that may very well be affected by our beloved characters. Anywhere around the world.

Stories with medical and psychiatric history. Asylums, sanitariums, barber-surgeons... There's a whole other world there I'd love to read about.

One of my all time favourites: Religion. To be more precise, a really good in-depth meta or a full blown story by someone who knows what they're talking theologically, about how different religions relate to the movies. Is there room for the Bible, for example, in the middle of the pagan gods and goddesses? What are the characters' relationship with religion(s) and why? Anything blasphemous :)

The next chapter of ainsoph's 'Call'

Small, everyday moments in the everyday life of Jack and Will (in J/W-context). Yes, I desperately want to read about Jack and Will cleaning fish, and making tea, and peeling potatoes, and... Seriously.

Anything written with as much literary realism as possible. If my arm was twisted, I'd have to confess that I wouldn't frown upon some porn written for this field.

...That's not too much to ask, is it? :P

I want to read more action oriented stories, with adventures and pirates and historical facts and intrigue, and PLOTS.

I am seriously believing that most fanfiction is written just for the porn. I prefer to write the characters as real people of history.

Not the most popular route, hence the abysmal lack of fun action oriented adventures.

Neither one of them are synched just really well, but the second is great just for Will's part if nothing else.

I must admit, I first came got into fandom for the porn. And I still love it, but... After a few years of reading mostly pwp(lots), I've developed a need for P(lots). And, though I really don't care for WIPs (as they rarely get finished), I love reading long, complex stories. (Though I'm still stuck on J/W, and probably wouldn't bother to read a highly recommended five star fic if the primary focus was some other pairing or if the fic lacked one or both of those characters.)

And, yeah, I haven't been reading much of anything in potc fandom lately, so what I'd really like to see is myself getting involved in the fanfiction - the reading or the writing of it.

That would be a triple Aye. Used to read a lot of Sparrington fic. Have been reading Rexluxus' current excellent sparrington fic and have been thinking, where's my Turrow?


Pathetic comment coming up: Saw Milk and it is an excellent movie. As a measure of my complete Turrow devotion, the Harvey Milk/ Scott Smith subplot made me think of Jack/Will. Harvey/Jack as the extrovert seeing the incredibly gorgeous Scott/Will and pursuing him. Pretty much the love of his life. But then Jack, I mean Harvey, screws it up, and Will, I mean, Scott leaves. However, Will and Jack, I mean Scott and Harvey, never forgot each other.

I always thought it would be interesting to see what Will might encounter as Captain of the Dutchman, besides the dead...spirits, creatures, other gods or goddesses, etc. from the many different peoples he would come in contact with.

I would love to, but I do not have time, but I would love to correct and rewrite the entire mess that was Dean Man's Chest and Awe, keeping it as canon as possible, but within established character arcs of POTC. It would be more difficult than people think because, really, the story was all told in COBP, but it could be done.

Will/Ana, Post-AWE. It wouldn't have to be sex, although I love that pairing. I just think that they are two people who would get along, and would work together well. Everyone always wants to write her with Jack or Elizabeth, but the few W/A fics out there have convinced me that they just might possibly belong together. Both of them have taken some hard knocks, they are both emotionally contained, hardened, honorable, highly competent people. So I'd like to see romance in the context of a good story, but I'd settle for them being allies and friends in the context of a good story.

I'd love to see modern day Au. I'd love to see more AU, period. Like, what would have happened if Jack had become the Captain of tFD?

Some light-hearted fic post-AWE would be nice. We've see a lot of fic that works out how various pairing work it out --what happens afterward? Do J/W, J/W/E, N/W, etc. get to have any fun together? At the very least a bit of angst-free sex? Does the FD ever go any interesting places? Any other supernatural beings out there Will could hang with?

Basically, I'm really only interested in reading about Will at this point. If he's not in a story, I could really care...but at least I'm up front about it. I make an exception for my favorite authors, but I don't really check out other stuff.

As usual, I'm a day late and a dollar short....

I'm seeing people talking about wanting longer more complex plots etc. Would anyone in the fandom consider doing something like a bigbang challenge? Rules etc are of course up to the organizers but it might inject a little commitment and plot into things.
