The federal government shutdown is an all-around problem for all the U.S., but it's not a two-sided effort by any means. The GOP is SOLELY, squarely to blame for this one. Yes, it certainly is. Previous efforts at the brink since the 1996 shutdown, at least, have been a two-sided argument over whether to raise a debt ceiling, or incur more deficit, or whatever - a debate over the merits of A Particular Thing. This, though, is like a kid telling his parents he's not going to mow the lawn until his sister gives him back the cookies she stole. Demand a raise in allowance, demand a better mower, but make your demand appropriate to the thing being discussed.

The Teabaggers are to blame for holding their breath and stomping their feet, and the rest of the Republicans (i.e., the fucking MAJORITY) are to blame for being that parent who, instead of dragging them into the bathroom and spanking their ass, facilitates the temper tantrum and actually says "Please" to try to get them to stop. And, it's for the same reasons. Those parents know they're no longer in control, and they're embarrassed to be seen by everyone else as having been taken in by the spoiled little brats.

I see why. I mean, if you're a white person of a certain age in this country, especially male, you're used to blowharding and arguing until you get your way (usually maintaining the status quo in your favor). So you think it'll work this time, too. And who knows, it might. If you've hardly ever had to compromise in your personal life, your work, your marriage, your family, why should you start now? I mean, these are the people who believe in old-fashioned hard work and making it ALL ON YOUR OWN WITH NO HELP WHATSOEVER. Riiiiiiiight. Like reasonably well-doing white people never had an advantage in this country (and I include myself in that choice bit of ass-biting sarcasm). You can lie to me in the comments and tell me it isn't true, but you can't lie to yourself. (Or to your God.)

I say the same thing about these people that I say about the homophobes: They'll die someday, taking the majority of their arrogant, antiquated asshole beliefs with them. My mother taught me to never actively wish for anyone's death, so I don't. But it'll happen; not soon enough to end this shutdown. But, something will end it. Just remains to be seen who'll cave and how. You can almost bet if there's a compromise, it'll be the Dems that initiate it, just going off history the past couple of decades.

P.S. I don't know what this is going to do on a practical level. Maybe not much! Maybe it's just that almost a million employees won't get paid for a while. That's no big deal, is it? I'm sure their landlords and power companies and grocery stores will patiently subsidize their downtime. It's less than 1/300th of our population, after all.
