Last night I DVRed the MTV VMAs because I knew Gaga and Macklemore would be on - my sister and I FF through the rest of the crap and watch the performances we want to see. So before we could watch, though, this photo of Will Smith and his kids watching Miley Cyrus onstage was put up online. We had a laugh over it, thinking it was probably part of the performance (like how the actresses in the "audience" reacting with "shock" to Seth's Oscar "Boobs" song were clearly pre-recorded as part of the skit) - after all, Will, like most singers and actors, is usually good-natured with fellow artists so as not to create professional animosity. But no, it appears this might have actually been a genuinely candid reaction shot ... and we had sort of a similar one when we finally watched our DVR later and saw Miley's performance. Pretty much all I could think the whole time was trying to figure out what in the hell was going on; and that Gaga had worn even less to open the show and exhibited more talent, in her singing and choreography.

I read that Miley shocked some people - really? Did they just crawl out from under a rock for 30 years? Madonna was doing this in the mid-80s, before Miley was ever thought about - I'm not saying she did it better (and I'm not saying she didn't), but I'm puzzled why this shocks anyone now. IIRC Madonna's performance was on network TV and Miley's was on cable ... so I really don't know what was shocking about it. Plus, Miley has made it clear since before she turned 18 that she is not interested in holding on to the teen princess image her father and Disney had crafted for her.

Mostly, all this is to distract from the news that the U.S. could make a Syrian strike without UN approval. I didn't like it when Bush took this kind of action, and I'm really not liking it now that Obama is considering it. I suppose Libya didn't turn out to be a disaster, but I still hang on to the idea that by and large, a number of nations should work in concert to bring one of their own under control. I honestly don't know enough about the issue right now. (I did know enough about Iraq in 2003, considering it had been a running theme for 13 years, at least, to realize a U.S. strike was a bad idea before it happened.)
