infidelity, that thy name is praised
Jul. 22nd, 2010 05:07 pmSo over at fandomsecrets there was a discussion a couple of days ago about movies that have relationship infidelity in them. Some anonymouse makes a statement to the effect of "that's why I hated Brokeback Mountain." That was it - the only example given. So I asked, why pick THAT movie out of all the movies that have somehow justified or glorified infidelity in some fashion? Frankly, I thought it was suspect and I'm not sure the commenter gave me any reason to change my mind with all their overexplaining and then lashing out at ME for being oversensitive. (I didn't even accuse them of anything; I just indicated it was strange of all the movies with straight people cheating on each other out there, that they'd pick this one and ONLY this one to cite.) You don't like the movie because it had gay people, or because you dislike Westerns, or you're not fond of Jake Gyllenhaal - any of those - just say so. ESPECIALLY if you're posting anonymously and you're too afraid to say that ... well, you're just a special kind of chickenshit.
So, this brings me to another version of Name Me Some Movies. Name me one or more movies, in the comments, that are generally regarded well by critics and that contain infidelity cast in any sort of positive (or at least not negative) light. I don't care if you think it's an obvious one (like, say, "Titanic" just to throw one out there); if it hasn't already been named, name it. If it's a morality play that shows the awfulness and bad consequences of cheating, it really wouldn't work so well - but if there's any justification (i.e., abusive husband, boring home life, dying spouse, etc. etc.) that makes the resulting relationship/romance come across as at all positive or sympathetic, name it. I don't care if they're gay or straight, but by sheer volume, movies featuring straight characters have got to win out for numbers.
