Apr. 13th, 2009 01:17 pmIt's interesting to watch some DMC fans prematurely celebrating the reported departure of Gore Verbinski from the POTC franchise - and throwing the writers under the bus, in the mix - complaining about out-of-character behavior and lack of good character development in AWE as some of their reasons for wanting those three gone.
I recall some of these very same people telling fans who had the same complaints about DMC, between the release of DMC and AWE, to just wait for the magic of Ted and Terry and Gore to work on resolution in AWE. Understandably, some who didn't get their way in AWE then proceeded to complain about the very same problems as the DMC-complainers had brought up.
Which would be fine. They're just movies, after all. And all the arguing that went on - my part included, but certainly not limited to me - was ridiculousness cubed and carried toward infinity. But there was a good deal of bad behavior that kicked it all off, IMO, in the process of some DMC fans telling their fellows who had problems with it, to just deal and not ruin their good time with the whining. I saw far too much "shut up and don't question" cloaked behind fancy words. I saw real-world political meta put forth to justify 'ship preference, in a series that frankly left very little room for realism of anything (although to be fair, this isn't the only fandom that does it; just the first I'd seen). I saw people who had once not only gotten along but lobbed ideas off one another and talked about stuff in their real lives, stop speaking altogether. I saw people LEAVE - most not because the canon was so bad that they couldn't still have some fun with it, but because they were treated so horribly by fellow fans and one-time friends, who then didn't seem to give a damn they'd caused these problems. (Not everybody is made of cast iron. Some people really do get their feelings hurt when people they like or respect say something inappropriately unkind or catty to them, and aren't capable of being unkind in return. They feel their only option is to shut up or go away.)
I still feel snarky on the occasional day about all this. But I guess more than anything, I'm over the sniping and complaining and button-pushing. I'd like to stay in this fandom on LJ - POTC got me through a really rough period in my life and I have fond memories of most of fandom - but it makes me sort of ill to think this is all going to start up again with the advent of a POTC4. (Though at least I know to keep any of my movie criticisms to only certain places in the future.)
I can't be the only one who feels like this. And maybe that's the reason I don't want a POTC4.
