I understand the younger cat would like to spend more time outside. When it warms up more often past winter, I won't mind letting him stay outside in the dark. But right now it's still chilly at night and the wind blows and it's been raining after dark. And I'd really rather not have to stand out in that calling for him, or hear loud meowing at 2 a.m. to let him in after I'm asleep.

What is about to drive me up the tree is the sound on the kitchen linoleum of the water dishes scraping across it. For years I had one cat who drank out of a bowl and that was it. No water sports. This one must have been a perch or a flounder in a previous life - I have never seen a cat so fascinated by water. I pour it into the bowl; he immediately sticks his face down in it and stares until it stops swirling. Then he sticks his paw in it, dirtying it for both cats. *sigh* He was dumping all the water in his old bowl out, until I found a bowl with a non-spill lid - now he just sticks his paw in the center and drags it around the kitchen.

But the capper is the upside-down plastic waterer I got to fill for when I'm gone for a week or so. When it's completely full, it's heavy and not really a problem - but when it gets down to about half-full, he puts his paw in the water-filled tray at the bottom AND FUCKING DRAGS IT AROUND THE KITCHEN LIKE A LIVESTOCK TRAILER. I AM NOT EVEN KIDDING. You have no idea how the sound of plastic scraping linoleum makes me wince and grind my teeth anymore, because I know I'll have a half-gallon of water to clean up. (And there's nothing that deters him - of course water in a spray bottle has no effect BECAUSE HE'S NOT REALLY A CAT. HE'S A BEACHED MERMAID WITH FUR.)

*sigh*
