GOOD shit for a change, dearests!

The stories are all posted now at the Anonymous Swagfest at [livejournal.com profile] raise_the_dead! The one written for me is a wholly fabulous Turrow that I'd like to share and have everybody go read and comment upon! (I also wrote for it - can you guess who I am?)

Also, it was five years ago today that CotBP was released in theaters and we all met Jack Sparrow (Captain, lovelies. Captain Jack Sparrow) and most of the rest of the gang that has gotten most of us together here on LJ. Go tell the three things fandom has brought you, at [livejournal.com profile] potc_discussion (or if you're a Will fan, there's also [livejournal.com profile] turningpirate).

ETA: If you're a J/W fan, [livejournal.com profile] ainsoph15 made the cutest little video using Sims characters at her journal. (Warning: If you're not a fan of the California Supreme Court decision on gay marriage, you probably shouldn't click.)

There were a couple of good program bits on NPR in the last few days.

1. How the uncertainties of war and the breakdown of society in Iraq is translating to a skyrocketing divorce rate. You can read the story, but I recommend listening to the broadcast instead. It's all very well and good to say you're promoting American ideals and democracy by invading a "heathen" nation (actually, that reason is bullshit - war has never been waged to bring anything to the conquered nation, it's always for power, land, or resources - but that's beside the point), but the fact is, unless you're prepared to provide all the little things that make up a modern democracy - such as all facets of gender equality - you're really just creating a hell of a mess that somebody (probably not you) is going to have to clean up. The story talks about men leaving their wives because it's become too expensive to support them, and either being on their own or remarrying women with better financial prospects - and how the women have to cope with suddenly being back with their parents at middle-age, or fending for themselves when there's ill preparation to do so.

2. The decision of the Church of England to allow female bishops. Now I'm not a religious person, so I may just come off like an insensitive clod here, but ... the part with the traditionalists bitching about wanting concessions for agreeing to treat half the human race like they can have the same opportunities as the other half? Shut the fuck up. "Superbishops?" I nearly died laughing when I heard that - I pictured the Pope in a short cape and Brillo'd hair, and the Popemobile with twin jet engines. And while I agree the issue of female bishops and welcoming homosexuals in the church's ranks are closely related, I do have one tiny nitpick with equating the issues; I do believe in equal rights for homosexuals, but to me, sexual orientation comes behind simply existing, and being limited or punished for what gender you are seems just a tiny bit worse than for being homosexual. (Just a sliver.) You don't have choice over either (at least not without surgery), but you can choose to be celibate - however, it's sort of difficult to stash those boobs and hips somewhere where nobody'll notice or judge you on them.

A video that made me think of [livejournal.com profile] poetic_self - anybody can watch it, but particularly I thought of her (watch the entire thing):

(I'm sure there's some POTC inspiration to be found in that somewhere ...)

Also - anybody have any POTC drabble ideas? Just asking ...
