veronica_rich: (potc stooges)
On occasion, someone will comment on my avatar *points* and wonder about it. I guess you could say the Stooges might have been my first real "fandom" - consisting exclusively of me and Dad. (Mom and my sister could never get into it, the same way they could never get into our interest in stock-car racing - yeah, I swear, I'm a liberal feminist, LOL. And a girl. I can't be categorized so easily.)

Anyway, it would be difficult for me to show you EVERY Stooges scene I love, having seen the short features probably a hundred times apiece in reruns on old local TV stations out of St. Louis, starting at about age 3. But I found a few on YouTube, including a full-length feature "Hokus Pokus":

A little more this way )

Ah, the education my f-list provides me. (Usually, I just post about the entertainment I get out of 'em.) [livejournal.com profile] angry_biscuit talks about female genital mutilation, and explains there are places in the U.S. where it still takes place. I was not aware of this, I'm sorry to say, but he has a whole boatload of links if you're interested, in his journal. Biscuit's the kind of guy I don't mind being interested in female sexuality and reproduction, since he believes any decision regarding one's own self is ultimately up to the individual.

I've been a member of [livejournal.com profile] childfree for ... well, a good long while, now. It's a controversial community, it has its intolerant idiots and non-thinkers, but they're in the low minority and everyone else is reasonable and usually some fun. A lot of what gets discussed are female reproductive and social rights (since it's the female who has to bear children, and a woman choosing NOT to do so isn't always looked upon kindly). I had no idea the ERA had come up again, but an entry in today's slew of posts brings it up and has a couple of links to check out. (One commenter is right: We shouldn't *need* an ERA to force employers to pay the same, to allow women the opportunity to govern their own bodies - then again, we shouldn't have needed an Amendment to expressly forbid and prohibit human enslavement, either. But we really did.)

Fandom stuff under a cut, since it doesn't match tone - especially for Alicia )

I think my sister, [livejournal.com profile] dahlianna, is going to have to stop making POTC videos. She was telling me about a dream she had last night, where she went to the local Mobil convenience store and Jack and Gibbs were hanging out there ... with a van.

"Wait - like Jay and Silent Bob, hanging out at the Kwikie-Mart?"

"No, and shut up! They had this van, and we went driving around town-"

"Backseat bangers??" (porn site - don't ask)

"No - we were all in the front seat. There was this little bench seat we were all wedged in on. Anyway, Jack was all depressed, and we went to the park with the ducks there in town. Jack and I walked up to where the spring was-"

"Where was Gibbs during all this?"

"I think he was back in the van, eating nachos. Jack, though, started telling me this story about how when he was a teenager, his mother wanted him to learn a trade, so she got him into cartography. So he joined the Navy to do that, and he was pressed into being a privateer."

"So ... Jack's an emo kid?"

"No, really! He was sad, and didn't have any way to express it - he's not a stress eater like Gibbs. It was kind of sad, really - harshed my mellow."

"Now you're just making up stuff."

"No, if I were making up stuff, it'd be about how we were in the back of the van doing it."

"Okay, true enough."

"Yeah. And his mom told him, 'Whatever you do, be a good man.'"

"I think you got that from 'Kingdom of Heaven,' actually."

"I don't think so ... but I really need to stop watching TV."

Yes, it's one of those days where I keep coming across things. Naomi Novik has been nominated for some awards for her initial Temeraire book, including a Hugo. You can see the complete list in her journal. If I haven't already bugged you to read this series, DO IT NOW. Adventure writing and character insight at its finest.
