What if ...
Mar. 20th, 2007 07:03 pmFor 15 years, I've been through several different fandoms, and I've always had a good time, even through disagreements over what was onscreen. I've never been through the sheer contrariness that's been swirling in POTC fandom for the past 8 months, even though I know some of you have. (I'm guessing I wouldn't have lasted long in Potter fandom, and that's okay. I just like the books and the movies, and I don't particularly mind that they don't always match.)
As much as I prefer general peace, I admit there's a good measure of fun we all get from both reasonable meta and from wank as a stress relief alternative to blowing up at someone in Real Life who probably deserves it - hence the Cucuy icon. Cucuy is an asshole, but he's an asshole who has reason to be as crabby as he is. He shoots people, which is a little further than I'd like to go, but I understand him. (Besides, his bullets aren't real, either.)
I'm not telling everyone to stop their wank, or to give up their 'ship. But I wonder - what if we all took 10 minutes to consider the very part of canon we don't like the most?
What if a W/E pondered the attraction of J/E? What if vice versa?
What if someone who is anti-Will imagined he wasn't in POTC, and could then sort of understand the positive need for him better?
What if someone who is anti-Elizabeth imagined there is a way she could be attracted equally to two men at once, but love one enough that she's willing to kill the other to save him - and not hate her for it?
What if a diehard slash reader could envision some excitement in watching one of their preferred men kissing a woman?
What if an RN fangirl considered that maybe there's *some* way James could've fallen off his white horse as badly as he did in a year's time?
What if it's possible something DID happen to Jack in 11 months that turned him into such an utter scared bastard only out for himself, instead of just a regular bastard who interrupts his routine to sometimes do a good deed just because?
I've turned off the comments. You don't have to post in your LJ. Or, you can. Just think. You don't have to change your mind - it's unlikely I'll change my opinions, either. Just ... ponder, is all. It's good to make the brain cells run in another direction once or twice.
