I am moved

Rather than reply to lingering comments to previous threads related to moving, I'll just post briefly.

I am moved in. I only have a few things unpacked (like important stuff - the computer, the television set, lettuce - LOL). Am hoping to do more tomorrow, especially the kitchen and bathroom stuff. I also am missing four boxes I didn't check off my checklist while the movers were unloading, but the truck was empty, so I'm betting they're around here somewhere. I was a bit distracted at one point, too, so they may have brought them in on one dolly and I just didn't catch it; this old woman came to my patio door and was rocking back and forth looking in, and when I went to let her in, she said she was lost and told me her name. She was wearing only socks, traipsing around in the snow. I told her to sit on the sofa and called the apartment office. When I wandered out for a moment to check with the movers on something, she got up and was going back out the back door. I had to drag her back in, and then her son came in the front way from the next building - he said he'd gone to the bathroom and when he came out, she was gone. The apartment manager later told me the old woman has a tendency to wander out naked sometimes and traipse around the complex. (In this weather? I understand Alzheimer's, but I didn't think it made one's skin impervious to the bone-chilling COLD.)

Sylvester has decided to stop being traumatized and take a nap. He slept most of the way on our eight-hour drive yesterday. It wouldn't have been quite as long, but I drove slower than usual - for him - and we stopped twice so I could get a snack and let him loose in the car to drink or eat. He eschewed both, choosing instead to crawl down into the driver's side floorboard and curl up for a short nap on my feet. (Even in a car, a feline knows just where to park itself to cause the most trouble, and where you most need to use something. Uncanny ... or should I say, uncatty?)

I don't know what all yet might be broken of my stuff, but my favorite floor lamp, the pole won't screw back down into the base. I'm going to have one of the maintenance guys see if they can fix it, because the mover and I could not. If a $40 lamp is the only casualty of this move, I'll consider myself lucky. The guys put everything where I wanted it, and it was cold and raining, so I gave them each $30 (while I feel the lamp could have been *better* restrained, the way it's designed, coupled with the HORRIBLY ROUGH interstate roads in Kentucky, I have to be a little forgiving).

And, I have cable! I haven't had cable TV in 7 years. When I moved to Tennessee, I didn't sign up for it, and my television set didn't even have an antenna, so I basically watched DVDs and VHS movies/tapes for almost two years until the set burned out. I bought another, which had antenna, so for the past 5 years I've at least had a few channels. I'm so NOT a TV person, so I'm not sure what to do with this, but the thing is, the cable is only $15 more a month bundled with broadband and the phone line, than having just those two, so I figured what the hell.

And, I need to see a doctor in the next couple of months. I haven't had insurance in over 6 years and haven't had any medical care in all that time. My arthritis (or whatever - I suspect it's possibly fibromyalgia (sp?) or carpal tunnel, but it's bad to self-diagnose) is really acting up a lot in the past few months - my right hand is alternately stiff and sore, or numb, and packing and lifting the past three weeks hasn't helped at all. (I also had to basically back off my walking for exercise, after I'd done it for over three years, because I was hurting too much.) Last night at the hotel, I was exhausted, but couldn't get to sleep - I could barely move at 4 a.m., and fortunately, had some Tylenol in my purse. It was the only way I could get back to sleep. I had a great-aunt who died in her 70s, and her hands were like claws with arthritis - I'm only 34 and I do NOT want to end up the same way, but I fear I will unless there are some really good advancements in joint treatment.

I signed my life away in various forms today - the cable company, the rental company, I opened a new bank account, and managed to get a few things at Wal-Mart (thank heavens it's just a quarter-mile up the road - I avoid Wal-Mart when possible because of the owners' politics, but in a pinch, I haven't much choice when Target is like 15 miles away). Thank Whatever the other secretaries and the other lawyer in the law office all bought me a Wallyworld gift card for a going-away last week - I only had to shell out a few dollars. I need more groceries, but first I have to find my pans! LOL. Tomorrow it's off to the insurance agency to see about getting my car switched over.

I am SO glad I don't start work until next week, but it's a real bitch income-wise, because I have nothing until after then.
