As always, my journal is a bastion of escape from Real Life(TM), including midterm elections (which I just finished discussing on the phone for two hours this weekend with a friend. It's a sort of troubling conclusion to which we've come - sure, the Dems might capture Congress, but if the then-lame duck Republicans continue maneuvering things the way they're going with respect to continued presence in Iraq and possible war against Iran and/or North Korea, we're going to need a draft, UNLESS the Dems grow some balls and quit spouting the GOP party line of "Wecan'tpulloutnow!" If they don't pull out and Congress has to institute a draft, who will be blamed entirely for that? And what will that then mean for 2008?)
ANYWAY ... yeah, no wonder I prefer fandom arguments. They don't have to go anywhere and they can end mid-point without blowing up the world.
There've been a couple of good discussions on
potc_discussion lately regarding Jack's compass while he's rowing away from the ship at the end, at http://community.livejournal.com/potc_discussion/69625.html, and another regarding character development for Elizabeth (NO 'ship stuff, just her character itself, for a blessed change) at http://community.livejournal.com/potc_discussion/69292.html.
EDIT: On the topic of Real Life(TM) to sort of append my whiny emo post of a few days ago, I have to say I've finally heard a bit of economic disaster that actually makes me feel better, in the form of massive layoffs from NBC of personnel across the country. Here I've spent the last year struggling to figure out if I should go to the expense and time of getting a master's degree for broadcast work because it's more secure than print journalism ... and it turns out, it's not. I still don't know what to do next, but I've just been saved a year and a half and tens of thousands of dollars of debt!
