I thought about doing a poll, but ...
Sep. 13th, 2006 12:47 pmI'm curious to know how people feel about hate and wank memes.
I don't have a terribly strong reaction one way or the other. Even if the subject is something I can get on board with hating - a wank community against the Bush administration, or railing against J/E fangirls, for example - I find I usually can't rustle up enough enthusiasm for more than a single short burst of reading. This isn't to say I don't bitch enough about such things on my own, but for some reason seeing a community created around my annoyance just sucks the fun out of bitching about it once in a while here.
I think it's because participation demands a sustained level of vitriol that my depressive personality tries hard to reject (actually, it would like to ACCEPT stuff like this, but I forcibly try to keep it out so that I maintain an even keel). It's the same reason I can't stand political smear campaigns that rely solely on denigrating one's opponent rather than harping on one's own merits - it just goes on for too damn long. It's the same reason that after November 2004, I turned away from reading/watching national politics for a long while - months of anger and telling people exactly what I thought and knew of the incumbents did nothing to change what was causing my anger. It's the same reason I haven't seen DMC in a while - again, a month of bitching did nothing to change what annoyed me, so I removed myself from the questionable writing that had caused it.
