I am Veronica, and I am a J/W 'shipper. Yes, I am.

I've been one for coming up five years this summer. I saw the subtext from my first viewing of CotBP, and I've been seeing it since, even in spite of Disney's best efforts to kill it in DMC. (And, God love 'em, Johnny's and Orlando's chemistry remained intact and gave me enough moments anyway. *G*)

I read Turrow. I write Turrow. I also read Sparrington, Willington, Willabeth, Sparbossa, Barbossabeth, and just about anything else you put in front of me if it's done well and doesn't build itself up by blatantly tearing down what someone else likes. I've read a great deal of Sparrabeth and het, and I've commented on a great deal of Sparrabeth and het. I find it telling that I can count on my fingers the number of Sparrabeth fans who've ever commented on anything I've written, or that a great number of better slashers (especially J/W) have written, but that I see other pairings' fans commenting positively on het - especially J/E - stories all the time.

Even stories that otherwise blatantly make fun of what the slashers or Will fans like.

THAT is tolerance and fellowship.

And I think there are fans who could learn something from us homo- and pansy-loving perverts.

If only they would listen.

I've decided...

I do not like W/E. I like J/E even less. If a story is well enough written that it can elevate one of those two into something I would like, then kudos to them.

To be honest, I think E would be best suited to being on her own. J & W certainly do have chemistry, and if the J/W stories are well written, kudos to them as well.

The really nice thing about this fandom was that just about anything worked - you could play with all the characters sort of like Legos, either in romance or gen fic (and I guess you still can if you can ignore the commenters and the writers who seem more interested in getting "revenge" in their stories on fans whose preferences they don't agree with). There was only one fandom I ever liked slash in before this one; I've been mostly a het writer/reader, aside from writing some general stories as well.

*waves pansy-loving flag* The power of ghey compels you... The power of ghey compels you...

It's time to bring the sexyback Turrow back, I think. 'Homo-smash'! ;D

Oh, I don't think so at all. I believe there are fans who read this who wouldn't admit to it if you twisted their arms up behind their backs and forced them to watch Jack turn away from Elizabeth and plant a wet one on Will right now. *G*

Or, at least that's the impression I get from frustrated comments I read here and there on places I'm not supposed to be. ;-)

I wouldn't have such a mindset if I hadn't been forced into it. Some people would rather fandom be a parasitic competition than a symbiotic relationship (that is, until they see another group acting in similar fashion to them - and then suddenly they make with the "what's the big problem? what did WE ever do?" cow eyes and chanting, Lennonesque, "can't we just all get along?")

There's nothing to make a bully stop shaking you down for your lunch money than telling them they're fat enough already. ;-)

A smack across the face with a sea bass is tempting sometimes, isn't it? *G*

I can respect that another group of fans (a few W/E kids) wanted to FINALLY do something to stem the comments of negativity spread here and there toward what they like, but they went about it all wrong. If you concentrate on building up what you like, rather than writing stories that tear down what others enjoy, you feel better at the end of the day and you have something that you actually want to go back and read on its own merits a month later.

Well, that's my own personal red button issue: that our issues with that movie had nothing to do with characterization and ridiculous plot machinations, but everything to do with the fact that the movie was het in nature. And that we couldn't slash to our hearts content. I never thought I'd see slash in THIS fandom become a dirty word. Live and learn.

That's why I posted this - sort of a whole "we're women, let's take back the word 'bitch' thing" going on, I hope. Except, I don't want to crush anyone under my bootheel; I just want us to muscle our way back into the fandom where we ought to be again and widen the circle some more.
