I really appreciated the bit of Will not being such a good pirate, uncomfortable with that mantle.
THIS is what prompted the entire fic - I was rather surprised it took up so little of what I actually wrote, but that was the central nugget of the original idea. Watch AWE - everything Will does that is "piratey" feel sort of like playing dress-up in someone else's too-large clothes. And I don't believe at all that's bad acting - I think it's very GOOD acting. Will's never been a pirate, no matter his heritage or what Elizabeth wanted to believe about him. He's employed the techniques when need be ... but he's never embraced the lifestyle for himself. He does what has to be done - and even when he's "betraying" someone, it doesn't feel contrary to his essential character, to me.
I'm glad you liked it so well. I wouldn't say this is the pinnacle of anything, since I've read so much better, especially after AWE, but I'm flattered someone thinks as much. *blush*
