I don't LOOK for slash. Believe it or not, I'm not actually hardwired for it like some fans I know. But when it jumps out at me, I can't ignore it.
Okay, first of all: *Only* in Marvel comic-book land could THAT John-Travoltin' Peter Parker get women to look him up and down with those moves and that look. I mean, I don't know about you girls, but if I see a guy coming down the sidewalk like that, I cross the street - away from. Now I admit the jazz club dance number was nifty (except for how he was being a complete ass toward MJ), but the rest of it? Hoo, I hope it was intended to come off as "nerdy geek tries too hard." Admittedly, it's difficult to make Tobey Maguire "bad" - the man radiates Boy Scout badges. He wasn't wooden; if anything, he tried too hard at those parts.
It wasn't horrible, but ... they tried to fit too much into 2.5 hours. The transitions were not smooth; some plot points just happened too fast and didn't allow me to *feel* what was supposed to be going on behind them. And while I like Thomas Haden Church, what was the deal with the whole Sandman thing? Is that supposed to be an allegory for hanging on to poisonous feelings - it's like clumpy sand that gets up in your nose and pounds you to death?
Topher Grace was great. He shed that Eric Foreman thing like it warn't no THANG, as the kids say. I think we'll be seeing him in more stuff soon.
I love Peter/Mary Jane. That said, not to sound like a Sparrabether finding fault with Willabeth, but - Pete and MJ really are quite interesting when they're fighting and not getting along. I'd like to see some mad smoochy-boochies, to quote Jay.
But by far, the BEST part of the whole movie was the interaction between Pete and Harry from the penthouse fight scene onward. Ho-YAY! Guys, that was some first-class dick-waving battle action! Man, I wanna read angry Pete/Harry stuff now! (Please tell me they don't call it HarryPeter. Just don't.)
