for you youngsters of the 90s

I know some of you are significantly younger than I am. As pointed to me by [livejournal.com profile] crevette, here are some images from the Reagan years (actually Bush at this point - but Bush was running things during Reagan's years, anyway, too) from a typical shopping mall when I was a teenager.

Big hair! Cassettes! (CDs were a minority still at this point and DVDs were nowhere in existence) Huge cans of Aqua Net hair spray shoved down in your purse! Denim! God, the denim! Oh, the HUMANITY!

I always wanted to have big hair like that, but my hair was too fine to be big. Never could get the Charlie's Angles feathered hair look either.

One time - one time - I was able to get my hair to be and stay big. It was Halloween my freshman year (1986, if I'm doing my math right) and I had this pink dress and scarf, so I went as Jem. I hung over the side of my bed and sprayed my head with one of those entire costume cans of pink aerosol color. Then, I used an entire can of glitter hairspray; then, I moved on to the Aqua Net (which I actually used vary rarely - I think I carried the same can in my purse for an entire school year and used it like five times). My hair stayed up for several hours, even after I wanted it to go back down in the shower later ....

That sounds amazing.

I probably shouldn't take this time to mention that at Halloween 1986, I was too young to dress up, I think...nearly 6 months old.

I was there. I remember.

I was 17 in 1989 and I really don't remember seeing things change that much with regard to hair and clothes ... that is, until I see a picture from 22 years ago. Woah, man.

I kinda miss scrunchy socks and high-tops.

I don't miss the ugly types of polyester. Though, that was a lot in the 70s, there was still plenty left over for the 80s in the form of pants. Ugh.

You'll notice I didn't mention anything *but* scrunchy socks and high-tops.

And shoulder pads. Don't forget the shoulder pads. ;)

Hell, I'm so slope-shouldered, I need them *now.* However, not to the degree they were.

I remember this jacket I had in high school - it was linen-like, only not that nice, and thinner material. It had huge orange and white flowers printed all over it - you know, the typical "career woman" jacket of the 80s for someone over a size 8. The shoulder pads in it were EPIC.

I knew girls who took out shoulder pads from jackets and sweaters and used them to pad their bras. I guess the shape worked out, now that I think about it!

Funny how all that looked so normal, once upon a time. Except for the skinny jeans. I always thought they were odd looking. (Why do they keep coming back?) I can still remember when I first saw a pair on a friend of mine, back in '81. My immediate reaction was: bell bottoms are so much more flattering than that.

These days I have to work at fending off the Eighties Hair. :-p (It's really just flyaway hair with added crimp. Perfect for keeping in banana clips, a pain in the ass for anything else.)

I saw this and I was amazed. The funniest thing to me is the store in the background of one of the pictures: "Tape World."

I was guilty of the pink/black, black/tourquois combination in clothes. Two colors of High tops, with a different color on each foot. I even did the neon phase.

Can you tell I graduated in 1984? Ewwww.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I never had the big Aqua-net hair, though I was guilty of using too many rollers....
