Wow, except for my Olbermann bye-bye, it's been almost two weeks since I posted. THAT can't be right. Here are some stuff 'n things to throw at you:

My sister moved in with me a month ago - she quit her job two states away and moved here, and had a job offer with a good company in like two weeks. THAT is speed. I remember being out of work 10 years ago for several months, scraping by with odd jobs to make the rent, with only nibbles. It's better than either of us expected, so good job [livejournal.com profile] dahlianna! Of course, getting used to a roommate after 17 years living by myself is hard. When you live alone, there's nobody else to consider or argue with (yeah, yeah, there are benefits, but I'm telling you the drawbacks for an old misanthrope like me), and there's nobody to tell you that you're wrong once a day. LOL! But it'll work out. I just have to quit being inflexible in my habits, which isn't easy.

Partly because we need more room - my apartment was fine for just me, but too small for two of us, two cats, and a dog - and partly to move closer to a large city, we will be moving in a couple of months. Still trying to secure an actual location at this time, so wish us luck.

On politics: People is crazy. That is all. Well, no, that's not actually all. Frankly, I think there's a lot more to do immediately than to try repealing the federal health care reform bill of last year in its entirety - why not work on improving the parts I don't like? But don't get rid of it, it actually has some good provisions in there along with the chaff. If you're in Congress and you're looking for something to do, I could make a list; for starters, there are a couple of goddamn wars we could end. If you're really fixated on health care, though, why not look into steps to ensure everybody has access to basic care, instead of looking to cut off as many poor and working-poor people as possible? Nutbars.

Current fandom stuff: The excellent news is that apparently, there will be another season of Red Dwarf filming later this year for a 2012 release time. If I can afford to go to the UK to watch some taping in a live audience through the contacts and generosity of friends, I will. Of course, what concerns me more than affording it is the logistics of planning - it's like, OK, they'll be filming, but how far ahead of time will the crew and producers KNOW they're filming? How set in stone is that schedule once it's announced? Because in order to get any kind of deal on travel, you have to schedule quite some time in advance, and airline tickets are hard to change without additional fees. Plus, if you get there and the schedule is shifted to another week? Too bad; I can only take off a week at a time from work, and I only get so many weeks in a year. Luckily, it's nothing I really have to think much about until later this summer, I suspect.

The old fandom: Even with a new POTC movie coming out this May that I want to see, my time in the fandom is over. Except for keeping an eye on [livejournal.com profile] turningpirate (my baby! It just turned four years old), I'm out. Things have changed and soured so much from what they were about five years ago, and I no longer have the interest to do more than a drive-by skimming of fics or discussions anymore (although I admit that certain types of posts still make me stop, point, and laugh, and not in a flattering way *G*). I think I'll just go see OST in May and enjoy being a spectator with my 3D nerdglasses.

Sherlock: My sister made me watch this show. It's not bad. I was into Doyle's Holmes and Watson about 15 years ago, not to mention all the pastiches and "inspired by" professional fanfic novels I could buy, so I sort of feel like my time is past, but good entertainment is good entertainment, and I'm glad I have a background to know sort of what to expect of the characters. Good on Steven Moffat for finding a new way to present these guys to a modern public.
