gratitude #5
Aug. 6th, 2010 12:48 pmSatisfaction is ... having an employee whose work almost always presents you with some difficulties, nominate you for an award. I'm not sure I'm qualified to get it, I'm pretty sure I won't get it, but it's nice to be thought of that well.
Now, for the other end of the spectrum.
Remember yesterday's rant about e-mail forwards on politics and religion and how I generally don't really enjoy getting them from people who know it might annoy me - but send them anyway in an effort to "educate" me, I suppose? What I got was a screed against Obama for some religious thing that didn't even happen. Because it was one of those forwards thinly disguised as "news" (and we all know how I feel about fake and poorly-checked news, also a recent rant - I mean, I can SHOW you articles about real issues, that criticize Obama, that I agree with), I spent about 2 minutes tracking down the actual news story, cross-checked it with two reputable news organizations, and sent a "reply all" e-mail explaining what the actual news story consisted of.
My reply contained no opinion (trust me, I know how not to put in bias unless I intend to), and a note at the end of how I found the articles. What I got back was a reply from my friend's brother - a factory machinist - fucking LECTURING ME on how the only reputable news organization is FOX and basically how I don't know my ass from a hole in the ground. Let me put this into perspective for you: We're not talking about some faceless idiot at FandomSecrets bitching at me, another faceless idiot, over the Internet - this man has known me for several years, we've spent Thanksgivings and other entire days in each other's company. He knows how old I am, what I do for a living, how long I've done it, and how concerned I am with accuracy when it comes to information (which is not opinion, admittedly - but I didn't express an opinion in my reply, I stated facts). He knows my job is relatively small compared to the world out there, but that I take pride in my work nonetheless. (Yeah, I told him I was insulted and expected better. I would hope to hear back some sort of apology, but I don't expect it, sadly - someone this far brainwashed probably thinks he was perfectly justified in demeaning even a friend professionally in the pursuit of pushing his agenda.)
