15 ain't so bad, but I'd like more
Aug. 22nd, 2007 12:46 pmI really need to get back on the original-fic train - not away from fanfic, but in addition to it. (If Naomi Novik can do it, I ought to be able to get off my dead ass, too. Of course, I'm not sure if her full-time job now is novel-writing, but I can guess it wasn't before.) I've been mentally slowed down for a long while because of multiple jobs and self-inflicted creative blocks, and while it didn't matter for a long time, the fact is that I do have an ego. Don't get me wrong, it's fun being a BNF to 15 people in a small fandom, but having read the last installment in the HP series, I suspect I'd rather have more fans and more people who think I write well enough to recommend what I write (though I don't ever expect it to be on the scale to Rowling or Novik). Plus, the money would be OK. And that's not going to happen with fanfic - the characters don't belong to me, the settings don't belong to me, and the plots are retreads of the same seven that have been used throughout writing history. I simply need to create a new vehicle of my own for those plots. :-D
