I really, really love this. Poor Will, confronted suddenly with the real meaning of the fate he's been thus far dealing with. And Bill has a chance to be there for once, for the first time. Not that it really makes up for not being there when it mattered, but the fact that they make a connection really hit home emotionally.

That makes so much sense. There are a ton of insights here that had me nodding my head--Will tolerating the sea, how he gets his strength from his mother, his dedication to his job despite his anger at fate. And no one getting any rum under Jack's leadership, hee! Been reading a lot of fics from Elizabeth's POV (and writing bits, none of which have developed into anything postable) so it's good that someone's got a handle on Will's side of things.
