Someone's gotta write this ...
You know how you never realize something until someone points it out to you? Like how
indigocat read my Titanic story and immediately wondered what the passengers and crew of the Lusitania would think of the identity of the Captain of the Flying Dutchman. I have a general knowledge of the Lusitania, but I had NO idea of the name!
Someone with a good grasp of history needs to write this story. They SO do.

I don't have enough history to write it, though.

(You know - I'd have the tiniest bit of respect for the writers if I thought they had based Will on this guy, because it would speak to some idea of continuity for three movies when the first one was being written. But the chances of that being the case are probably low. *G*)

I thought I read somewhere (on KttC, I think?) that they claimed they did pick the name as one of a famous captain, but I could be totally wrong about that. We know there's no real continuity, though, because they never planned on more than one movie.

Did I read something somewhere recently that the writers basically said they knew their ending of the sequels - Will taking over the Dutchman - so everything needed to lead to that? That would basically mean that EVERYTHING - including certain romantic subplots - were designed to serve Will's story. For some reason, that amuses me far more than it used to, if the writers truly did everything to work toward Will's ending.
