Someone's gotta write this ...

You know how you never realize something until someone points it out to you? Like how [livejournal.com profile] indigocat read my Titanic story and immediately wondered what the passengers and crew of the Lusitania would think of the identity of the Captain of the Flying Dutchman. I have a general knowledge of the Lusitania, but I had NO idea of the name!

Someone with a good grasp of history needs to write this story. They SO do.

Clearly a descendant, yes?

I don't have enough history to write it, though.

Considering the guy survived three shipwrecks, almost a fourth, and conducted no fewer than three near-impossible rescues and was promoted to Commodore? I'd say so!

(You know - I'd have the tiniest bit of respect for the writers if I thought they had based Will on this guy, because it would speak to some idea of continuity for three movies when the first one was being written. But the chances of that being the case are probably low. *G*)

Someone was definitely looking after him at sea...

I thought I read somewhere (on KttC, I think?) that they claimed they did pick the name as one of a famous captain, but I could be totally wrong about that. We know there's no real continuity, though, because they never planned on more than one movie.

*fic bunnies gnawing at brain*

GODDAMMIT MY HEAD IS NOT A CARROT GARDEN.

They are zombie bunnies?

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Shaun of the Dead bunnies. (And now I expect to see Bill Nighy show up and ask me if I've finished mowing the lawn. "Sorry, Phillip.")

(I don't think T&T were the ones that did the naming. On the CotBP writers commentary, one of the other writers claimed that he'd done it. They were Sparrow because he needs to be free and Swann because she's graceful and then he snapped himself out of the animal names because then it'd be a tad too much. He didn't say why "Turner" though he joked about it being "Will Bear" or something.)

Oh, I know - I remember that part of the commentary (I never did watch the DMC commentary, though I confess I'm interested in the AWE commentary).

Did I read something somewhere recently that the writers basically said they knew their ending of the sequels - Will taking over the Dutchman - so everything needed to lead to that? That would basically mean that EVERYTHING - including certain romantic subplots - were designed to serve Will's story. For some reason, that amuses me far more than it used to, if the writers truly did everything to work toward Will's ending.

I've read that too. When you put it that way, I too am very amused. Someone also at the official board asked when Orlando knew Will's fate and Terry said the start of DMC filming.

Hey, the boy CAN keep a secret, all evidence to the contrary! Go OB! *G*

"if the writers truly did everything to work toward Will's ending"

Oh, now that would be Wicked Awesome! :-p (And makes me grin like an idiot. :D )

Yeah. It means perhaps not *everything* was all about The Elizabeth after all.

Wasn't Will (in keeping with the 'bird' theme) named after the 16th century British ornithologist and botanist William Turner?

But I do like the idea that someone, somewhere was thinking of the captain of the Lusitania.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who specifically he was named after. I wouldn't be surprised by anything, because frankly, the first and last name are both very common - I have to imagine that them going together is common as well.

[identity profile] pseudoblu.livejournal.com 2007-06-16 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
O_O Wow! Man I really hope someone writes that. Clearly someone was looking out for that guy.
