A word about grace

Perhaps "graciousness" is not a topic I'm qualified to mention, since I can pretty easily slip in and out of it. However, believe it or not, as a slash fan, I've said all along I have no dog in this fight except complaints about skewed characterizaton.

To me, it's no real surprise that it's looking as though AWE will end W/E. For anyone who worries otherwise ... God love you, but I don't think it's gonna happen. I think the most you can hope for is an implied threesome.

W/E fans have a real opportunity in upcoming weeks to show class. No matter what has come before, taking these spoilers - real and hoped-for - as license to bounce around and do an "IN YER FACE!!" to J/E fans would be a mistake, IMO. For one, it's not very nice. For two, you gotta feel sorry for the people who won't get the ending they wanted. For three, there's still that 1-percent chance that things won't end in your favor, and then how stupid would you look?

The first two apply after the movie comes out, too. J/E fans are likely going to be massively disappointed, and while I don't hold their POV, I can empathize with not having a movie be as good as you'd hoped.

Come on, W/E people. Consider being calm and nice. The people who're going to Will-bash are going to do it however things turn out; you're not doing it for them. You're doing it for yourselves, mostly.

I'm afraid I already did a little of that. I'll probably continue (in the eyes of the seriously J/E inclined), but only to show folks without the books how it appears to someone who isn't dreaming of either a W/E or a J/E ending.

Aw, hell. You know I'm going to be far more excited about any traces of J/W I find in the text. Should I post warnings for that particular pairing in [livejournal.com profile] turningpirate if I know I'm going to gush? Or would you prefer that sort of thing be left to private journals? (Something I'd seriously consider doing anyway - as I usually do hate to embarrass myself in public. :-p)

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Slash is exempted, since we know nothing outside Showtime or HBO is going to end THAT way. *G*

[identity profile] yoiebear.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to sit back and let this ride as well as wait until the movie opens before I do something very W/E, which will probably be in the form of dirty fanfiction. Is that classy enough? LOL

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
Smut is fine by me. I'll stand in line ...

[identity profile] yoiebear.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I like writing smut and I think I can do it well after AWE. What do you think?

I am writing the Will fic, I just haven't had much time to work on it lately.

Well I know what it is to be on a sinking ship - the RMS H/Hr of the Harry Potter Shipping Wars - so I won't be crowing even if I were that active on the PotC fandom.

Good post.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, the people who'll behave themselves don't need to be told. As for anyone else ... well, hell, who knows.

[identity profile] stabbycutlass.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, there's a chance even W/E shippers will come out of this dissappointed. But I agree, no taunting.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you might be right.

But not all 'ships will be disappointed. Those of us whose canon never had a snowball's chance in Florida may be sitting fairly undusted when it's over.

[identity profile] solitaryraven.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen, even the WE shippers aren't too keen on the ending that we seem to be getting.

Minus a few people maybe, I don't see any of the WE shippers I know at KTTC gloating. They'll probably be excited, but actually throwing it in the faces of other fans is something that I really don't see happening.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering if the ending - IF true - is being left sort of open for that very reason. (You gotta admit, there's a loophole in there - you just have to be able to spot it - for either het 'ship.)

[identity profile] solitaryraven.livejournal.com 2007-04-17 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I was sort of wondering that too. Although, in one sense, looking at it more closely, it actually proves that it's going to be WE even more strongly. The entire point is that Will isn't Jones even though there are definite similarities. Jones could only set foot on land once every ten years because his love was unfaithful to him. Someone at KTTC pointed out that according to that script (or the novelization, I can't remember which), Will can return to land in ten years if his love remains faithful. As the poster at KTTC suggested, this seems to imply that as long as Elizabeth remains faithful, Will will be able to permenantly return to land after those ten years.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-04-17 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good point. I hadn't thought of that; I wonder if it does happen, if the distinction will be made in the movie?

[identity profile] solitaryraven.livejournal.com 2007-04-18 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I hope that it does.

I like that icon, btw. :O)

If they use the W/E ending that has been leaked, there are very few shippers of any sort that will be happy. As [livejournal.com profile] solitaryraven says above, there is woe amongst the W/E shippers on KttC (for the most part). I'm inclined to think TPTB are keeping the true ending under wraps until the last possible minute, but if I'm wrong it will be interesting to see how they turn what sounds like a tragedy into a marketable commodity.

As I told [livejournal.com profile] erinya below, don't bet on it.

Fanfic: Good Therapy for Bad Canon.

[identity profile] kahva.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Amen, hallelujah, and pass the wet tied up Will Turner!

Sorry, had to do that. Yes, I'm W/E, but from what's been leaked so far, if Will ends up CotFD, it won't be the ending I'd prefer - which would be W/E somewhere and neither one immortal, Norrington alive and free to be the good man he really is, and Jack free to sail the seas with his beloved Pearl. I'm pretty doggone sure most of my fanfic is going to stay in AU-after-CotBP-land, because I've got the feeling that after AWE, I'll find myself saying that the POTC sequels fell into the trap that the Matrix sequels did - trying to do too much, cram too much into two movies. I'm also bracing for all the bashers to be at their worse after Memorial Day weekend, no matter who they like to bash.

"Fanfic: Good Therapy for Bad Canon" really needs to be the name of a fanfic archive now. :)

Mmm. I'll have what you're having.

"Fanfic: Good Therapy for Bad Canon" really needs to be the name of a fanfic archive now.

And you know, we may need a multi-pairing AU fic archive after May 25th! I don't think the rumored ending is going to please a lot of people. It throws a wrench into every major pairing, including Jack/Pearl. Maybe the writers decided that since they couldn't make everyone happy, they'd make sure everyone was pissed off equally? (Except the Barbossa fans. They seem likely to fare the best.)

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)

Actually - I can work with it pretty well. *G*

[identity profile] erinya.livejournal.com 2007-04-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
It can be done, but it takes some creative...massaging of canon.

I forgot to say that I love your icon of Pepe le Pew as Jack Sparrow.

[identity profile] kahva.livejournal.com 2007-04-12 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
And you know, we may need a multi-pairing AU fic archive after May 25th!

{Nods} Probably will at that. Any archive that has good, non-bashing fic is something I'll frequent. It's been so hard to find good, non-bashing het or gen fic for so long now! I find myself re-reading the good stuff more than I'm finding new good stuff, it seems.

{Toys with tied up wet Will} Really shouldn't be playing with him here at work, but he's far more interesting than the programming I'm running at the moment. ;)

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I DON'T WANT HIM TIED UP! Means I'd have to do all the work, dammit ...

[identity profile] kahva.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's not the wrapping/tying up that counts - it's the unwrapping/untying ever so slowly where you have the fun!! ;) ;)

I'm channeling Mary Poppins here from the cleaning up the nursery scene - in every bit of work that must be done, there is an element of fun. Find the fun, and SNAP! ;)

Actually, just nevermind me, I'll be in the brig playing with tied up Will. Carry on! ;)
