I prefer this characterization too, and I think it is the most logical read on the Captain. What I'm worried about is that, in light of Elizabeth's oh-so-goddammned confident interpretation of Jack's "inner hero", what we'll get in part 3 is some ridiculous, treacly, "he wants to straighten up and fly right!" completion of his character arc, and what a shame that would be.
