I think it's because they're not "hot" and movie-star-worthy necessarily, like Jack and Will are. They're also not swashbuckling pirates. They're just everyday guys (and oh, now I want to put Rimmer and Barclay from TNG in a fic together to drive each other mad). And despite them being guys you wouldn't necessarily want to put up with in person, they ARE adorable.
