Our organized country was started by a bunch of religious nuts who were kicked out of their own homelands; we still carry a fair deal of that around today, collectively. It's a patriarchal, rigid, narrow-viewed way of looking at the world that employs emotional resonance over logic to get on top and stay there; say "killing babies" enough times, and nobody thinks about what a woman who doesn't want a pregnancy or can't afford a child goes through on a practical, daily basis, or how an unwanted child might suffer. In our country, white privilege plays a HUGE role in a conservative attitude of "you brought your own misfortune on yourself; you did something wrong to end up in debt/out of a job/homeless. I'm not lazy and shiftless, so that'll never happen to ME." There's no empathy or sympathy for those who have had and lost, or never had in the first place despite working for it. That's why Jesus is so popular - if bad shit happens to you, you can get through it by telling yourself God made it so, and if you put up with it, your afterlife will be just that much sweeter.
