And none of Red Dwarf; shall have to remedy that in the near future.
Some shows catch me with a desire to read or write fanfic; others do not. "Criminal Minds" for example, leaves me with no desire to do either right now, even though I enjoy the show. I don't know that I want much from it other than the individual episodes, if I want to feel personally involved with the characters. I think I just enjoy them acting out their play upon their stage. *G*
But "Red Dwarf" seems to have me teetering on writing; I have been reading the last few days. I first watched the show back in the 90s when it replayed on Sci-Fi (back in the days when you couldn't just go online and download a BBC show later that night - you had to wait for the film can to swim across the pond. The horrors!); it held my interest for 2-3 years and consequently, I didn't see much of the later series. I watched a bit with my sister when she took up interest a few years ago, but I just wasn't in the right "time of mind" to enjoy it again. Now, I guess, I am.
RE fanfic: What I get from the show now that I didn't pay as much attention to 15 years ago is the relationships, specifically, the quasi-canon slashiness that is Rimmer and Lister. (Yes, they kiss, in a dream sequence. After years of being in a fandom where characters looking at each other crosseyed is Sooper Cereal Sekrit Messages of True Canon Love, a dream-kiss is good enough for me, LOL.) Although, I can take a threesome with them and Kochanski; I'm not a snob. ANYWAY ... trying to read the slash fanfic in this fandom is weird because so much of it has such a serious bent, and the show is so NOT serious. Grant and Naylor constantly broke their own rules (if a hologram can touch nothing, how can a polymorph suck emotions from its forehead?) and had a great time doing it. It's a silly show, with decent actors who occasionally commit just enough drama to make you enjoy watching.
MY problem is that when looking for slashfic, I have a dichotomy in my brain: I sort of want a tiny bit of serious angsty UST to make it delicious - on the other hand, I'm reading too many fanfics that are TOO serious, as though these are not the silliest British characters since Bean. Something in-between would be nice. I feel like too many stories about Lister/Rimmer either end at the schmoop/sex/"I Love You" (which doesn't feel right), or if they go past that, they make the characters too agreeable and lovey-dovey. I LIKE their quarreling; I like Lister's eyerolling and slobbiness, and Rimmer's bitching and fussiness. It feels weird when that's removed. In other couples you could say the UST accounts for some of that, but with these two, I think they'd always be like that, sex or no.
ARGGHH. I wish I were still up to writing what it is I want to see. /bangs head

Date: 2010-03-09 06:53 pm (UTC)That's just what CM did to me in a freaky sort of way---but I can certainly see RD! Rob adored it and I watched quite a bit of it with him. Yeah......just enough angst and UST to spice things up but not the dreaded tweenie h/c epics or curtain-fics.
I'm SO so glad for you, luv! I really am!

Date: 2010-03-09 07:20 pm (UTC)Must be why my all time fave episode is Marooned, which is what, 95% Rimmer and Lister. And why I actually quite like Series 8, even though the later series aren't so popular with many people, because at least it frequently puts Rimmer and Lister alone together in a small room - well, cell - to drive each other crazy.

Date: 2010-03-09 07:48 pm (UTC)Neener-neener, and all that crap. I'm interested to see what all you come up with as we watch.

Date: 2010-03-09 08:21 pm (UTC)That's me and "Being Human" right now. Me and most things, right now. But...
Yay, for new fannish love! I have definitely seen the Lister/Rimmer in Red Dwarf. I'm thinking it was more than slash goggles that made me see that, but it's been so long since I've watched the series, I'm not remembering where within the series that was. (And there's always the possibility that I did imagine that bit. :-p )
Re: serious vs silly: They're like Ford Prefect and Aurthur Dent that way (I say that because I've read fanfic of those two, but not of L/R) - if you remove the funny, awkward traits, you've removed the characters. It does take talent to write a 'romance' around that dynamic and make it work.
You are up to it. Just try it.
